Microsoft Edge’s new feature that improves startup time or the prompt that ensures you don’t lose tabs is turning out to be an annoyance. Even if you close tabs before the shutdown, Edge is asking to “Restore Pages” with the message “Microsoft Edge closed while you had some pages open“, if Edge is consistently showing this dialog on every startup or restart, here is how you can disable that.
What you need to know:
- Edge is prompting to Restore pages that are open when Edge is closed
- The dialog appears only on Edge startup after shutdown or restart of the system
- Most users report they found the dialog annoying and want to disable it.
You usually notice Chrome showing to restore the previous session message when Chrome crashes for some reason, similar to Chrome, Edge is also exhibiting the same behavior.
Disable Restore pages dialog shown by Microsoft Edge
There are two ways to deal with this. If one works, you don’t need to follow second, sometimes you may have to try both.
I. Configure Edge to Restore the Previous session
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on Settings and more (Alt+F) (three-dot icon)
- Select Settings
- Select on Startup > enable “Continue where you left off”
II. Disable Startup Boost in Edge browser
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on Settings and more
- Select System
- Turn off “Startup boost” Setting
If you’re configured Edge browser to open a specific page or pages or a new tab on startup, you may want to try disabling the Startup boost feature in Edge first.
It’s worth noting this may impact Edge startup loading in a negative way.
After all, Microsoft claimed the Startup boost feature helps Edge startup times to improve from 29-41%.

That “Restore pages” message is driving me crazy. Neither the “X” or the “Restore” got rid of it.
Why do they make a person waste time dealing with it. Just leave good enough alone!
I read that Microsoft removed the ‘Startup Boost’ feature in late March 2021 due to user complaints. See? Sometimes MS does listen to us.) and released a new version of Edge, I have the most recent version of Edge (Version 89.0.774.68) which does not include Startup Boost on the system settings page, but I’m still getting the restore pages message every morning.
Has your Edge startup option set to “continue where you left off”?
The issue is that I don’t want to “continue where I left off” (and I guess i’ts the same for others people which complaint too).
I want to startup fresh (no opened tabs) *without* that popup.
