Microsoft has added the ability to Edge v89 for users to run a scan and find compromised passwords whenever needed. Till now, Edge’s Password Monitor checks the passwords saved to it against the leaked passwords database in the cloud and alerts if any of the users are affected.
Till now, Edge received new settings to
- control visibility of Reveal password button in the Password field
- generate strong and unique passwords
- Edit saved passwords
Now Edge allows users to run a scan on saved passwords.
How to scan for compromised passwords on-demand in Edge
- Launch Microsoft Edge browser
- Visit edge://settings/passwords/passwordMonitor
- Click on the “Scan Now” button at the bottom

- Wait for the Edge to show results and change passwords if necessary.
Do note, you can able to scan for leaked passwords in Edge only when you save passwords to it.
Ensure, “Offer to save password setting” is turned on on the Edge Passwords management page.
An option and a section similar to this, named “check passwords” is already available on “Chrome://settings/passwords”.
It’s no surprise that Edge’s on-demand leaked Password scanner works similar to the one present in Chrome.
Other changes in Edge 89
- If you’ve thought copy and pasting links in Edge is a mess, the browser shows keyboard shortcuts for pasting links and Pasting text in the “Share, copy and Paste ” section.
- Microsoft added a “Preload pages for faster browsing and searching” setting to Cookies and permissions. This setting is controlled by a Content blocker if you have an ad blocker installed.
- Background tabs now consume less battery than before.
- Edge 89 is available in the Dev channel with fixes to crashes on Linux and with vertical tabs and for the issue “ side by side configurations is invalid”
