Four months back, in a blog post, Microsoft showed off Edge’s new Vertical tabs feature, confirming it will be available to the users in the months to come. The feature is already available to some users via Controlled Feature Rollouts.
At the end of March, the Edge team said Collections, Password Monitor, Smart Copy, Vertical Tabs, Tracking Prevention, true private search in InPrivate mode, the Immersive Reader as some of the reasons you should switch to Edge browser.
While some of the above-mentioned features are already available in the new Microsoft Edge, Smart Copy isn’t available, but Vertical Tabs is, in Canary.
If you’re losing track of tabs with many tabs open in new Edge, organizing them with tab groups and closing unnecessary tabs, are ways to declutter the tab bar, so you can focus on other tabs. You may find OneTab extension and The Great Suspender extensions also useful. Side tabs or Vertical tabs can also address this problem.
Microsoft claims “Microsoft Edge is the only browser that allows you to manage your tabs on the side with a single click”.
As of now, according to this tweet posted by a user, you can enable and test the feature in Microsoft Edge
1. Launch Edge canary
2. Visit edge://flags
3. Search for “shy” and Enable the following flags
- “Enable Fullscreen dropdown”
- “Enable Swipe to ShyUI”
4. Restart the browser
Unfortunately, we’re not able to get the feature to work when we enabled related flags, but it is available to some, as Lumia confirmed. Microsoft also said the feature is always available in Canary for some time behind a flag.

So turn on the flags and let us know the feature is working for you or not. You don’t need to surprise if Microsoft enables the vertical tabs in Edge dev tomorrow, as they did this last time with Sidebar search.
10 years back, Google has actually tested Side tabs feature in Chrome, Firefox has also supported the feature via an extension which no longer exists now.
