When you inform Windows 10 you’re using a metered connection for your device, Windows and other apps won’t update automatically. This is one way of avoiding Windows Updates or another way to reduce data usage if you have got a limited data plan. Microsoft now allows Windows users to update Edge over metered connections also through a new setting in the browser. This feature is available in Canary 89.0.726.0.
You may be missing Edge’s crucial security updates because of the metered network. Generally, Edge updates automatically and applies new features, performance, and memory improvements, with fixes to various vulnerabilities, and bugs.
Starting with Creators Update, Windows 10 allows setting a Wired network connection as metered to give control over data usage.
Here is how you can make an Ethernet connection as Metered in Windows.
1. Open Settings
2. Click on Network & Internet
3. Under Ethernet, click on Properties which offers Settings for Metered Connections and to change Network profile to private or public
4. Under Metered connection, toggle the switch “Set as metered connection”
Enable updates in Edge on a metered connection
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on the three-dot icon and select Settings
- Select About Microsoft Edge
- Toggle “Download updates over metered connections” setting
The setting is self-explanatory: Enabling the above setting makes Edge download and install updates when you’re using a metered connection, Edge restart is required to apply the updates.
