Open clipboard history with Windows key + V

Clipboard history is off by default on both versions of Windows, so the first press of the shortcut usually shows a prompt instead of a list.

  1. Click inside any app where you can type, such as Notepad or a browser address bar.
  2. Press Windows key + V.
  3. If the panel shows a prompt, select Turn on.
  4. Copy a few things with Ctrl + C, then press Windows key + V again to see them listed, newest first.

Only items copied after you turn the feature on appear. Anything copied earlier is not recoverable from the panel.

Use this route if you prefer to switch the feature on from Settings first, or if the Windows key + V prompt did not appear.

  1. Open Start, then select Settings.
  2. Select System, then Clipboard.
  3. On Windows 11, set Clipboard history to On. On Windows 10, turn on the toggle under Clipboard history.
  4. Copy text or an image in any app with Ctrl + C.
  5. Press Windows key + V to open the clipboard history panel and scroll through the saved items.
  6. Select an item to paste it at the cursor in the app you are working in.

Ctrl + V still pastes only the most recent item. The history panel is how you reach the older ones, and it pairs well with the standard copy and paste keyboard shortcuts.

Pin, delete or clear clipboard history items

Pinned items stay in the list when you clear the history and when you restart the PC. Everything else is temporary.

What you want Where to do it What happens
Keep an item you reuse Press Windows key + V and pin the item from its options The item survives Clear all and restarts
Remove one item Press Windows key + V, select the … menu next to the item, then Delete Only that entry is removed
Remove everything except pinned items Press Windows key + V and select Clear all Local and cloud copies are cleared; pinned items stay
Clear from Settings Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear under Clear clipboard data Same result as Clear all
Stop saving history Settings > System > Clipboard, turn Clipboard history off Windows key + V shows the prompt again

On Windows 10 you can also clean clipboard history with CCleaner as part of a wider cleanup.

Sync clipboard history across your Windows devices

Sync is tied to your Microsoft account or work account, so every PC must be signed in with the same one.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
  2. On Windows 11, turn on Clipboard history across your devices. On Windows 10, set the toggle under Sync across devices to On.
  3. Choose Automatically sync text that I copy to send every text item to your other devices.
  4. Or choose Manually sync text that I copy, then open Windows key + V and select the sync button on each item you want uploaded.
  5. Repeat the same settings on each other PC signed in with that account.

What is clipboard history in Windows?

Clipboard history is a list of the items you copy, kept in memory so you can paste an older one instead of only the last thing you copied.

Detail Limit or behaviour
Number of entries Up to 25; older unpinned items drop off as new ones arrive
Size per item Up to 4 MB
Supported formats Text, HTML and bitmap images
After a restart History is cleared except pinned items
Default state Off until you turn it on
Supported versions Windows 11 and Windows 10, version 1809 and later
Shortcut Windows key + V

If you are not sure your PC is on version 1809 or later, check which Windows version you have first.

On Windows 11 the same panel family also holds emoji, GIFs, kaomoji and symbols, which open with Windows key + . (period).

Check that clipboard history is saving items

  1. Copy two different words in Notepad, one after the other.
  2. Press Windows key + V.
  3. Confirm both words appear, with the second one at the top.
  4. Select the older word and confirm it pastes into Notepad.

If the panel lists both entries, history is on and working. If it shows only a Turn on prompt, the feature is still off.

Clipboard history is not working

Windows key + V shows nothing or only a prompt

Clipboard history is off, which is the default.

  1. Select Turn on in the panel, or go to Settings > System > Clipboard and set Clipboard history to On.
  2. Copy something new; earlier copies are not added retroactively.
  3. Press Windows key + V again.

The clipboard history toggle is greyed out

The Allow Clipboard History policy is disabled, often by a work or school administrator.

  1. On a work or school PC, ask your IT administrator; the setting is managed centrally.
  2. On your own PC running Pro, Enterprise or Education, open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > OS Policies.
  4. Open Allow Clipboard History, set it to Not Configured or Enabled, and select OK.
  5. Return to Settings > System > Clipboard and turn the history on.

Clipboard items disappeared after a restart

Windows clears unpinned history on every restart by design.

  1. Pin any item you need to keep from the Windows key + V panel.
  2. Copy the content again if it was not pinned; there is no way to recover it.

An image or large item is missing from the list

Items over 4 MB, and formats other than text, HTML and bitmap, are not stored.

  1. Copy a smaller selection or a cropped image.
  2. For files, copy them in File Explorer as usual; the history panel is for content, not file copies.

Clipboard history is not syncing to other devices

Sync is off, set to manual, or the PCs use different accounts.

  1. Sign in with the same Microsoft account or work account on every PC.
  2. Turn on Clipboard history across your devices (Windows 11) or Sync across devices (Windows 10).
  3. Select Automatically sync text that I copy.
  4. On Windows 10, install the latest updates, which sync requires.

Windows 11 Home does not include the Group Policy Editor by default, but you can enable gpedit on Windows 11 Home before changing the policy.

Windows clipboard history FAQs

Why can't I see clipboard history in Windows?

Clipboard history is off by default. Press Windows key + V and select Turn on, or set Clipboard history to On in Settings > System > Clipboard. Only items copied after that point appear.

What shortcut opens clipboard history?

Windows key + V opens clipboard history on both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert still pastes only the most recent item.

Does clipboard history work in both Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Yes. Clipboard history works on Windows 11 and on Windows 10 version 1809 or later. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer gets security fixes.

Can clipboard history store images?

Yes, clipboard history stores bitmap images along with text and HTML. Each item can be up to 4 MB, so very large images are not saved.

How many items does Windows clipboard history keep?

Windows keeps up to 25 entries. When the list is full, the oldest unpinned items are removed automatically to make room for new ones.

How do I delete a single clipboard item?

Press Windows key + V, select the … menu next to the item, and select Delete. Only that entry is removed; the rest of the history stays.

Are pinned clipboard items permanent?

Pinned items stay through Clear all and through restarts until you unpin or delete them. Older unpinned items are the ones removed when the 25-entry list fills up.

Is clipboard history secure?

Clipboard history is kept in memory on your PC and cleared on restart, except pinned items. If sync is on, text also goes to the cloud through your account, so avoid copying passwords while sync is enabled.

Can I see clipboard history from before I turned it on?

No. Windows only records items copied after clipboard history is turned on, and it clears unpinned items on every restart.
