New Microsoft Edge based on Chromium supports Chrome extensions. You can install extensions in Edge from Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons Store. As of now, the latter contains a limited number of extensions. Contrary to Edge Add-ons Store, Chrome Web Store contains thousands of extensions. You can install themes and extensions in the Chrome browser from CWS.
Whenever updates are available, Chrome and Edge browsers will take care of updating the extensions. This happens without the user’s involvement.
However, you can also manually update Edge and Chrome extensions whenever you want in respective browsers. You are a click away from doing that.
Why it makes sense to update extensions manually, sometimes
Developers frequently release updates to their extensions by adding new features with bug fixes.
Sometimes, you may have to update an extension right away because it holding security vulnerability. Such an extension could allow arbitrary code execution. Updating it yourself will keep your device and browser secure.
How to Update Extensions in Microsoft Edge
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on the three-dot icon (…), select Extensions, or visit the edge://extensions page in the address bar
- Enable “Developer mode”
- Click the “Update” button

How to Update Extensions in Chrome browser
- Launch Chrome browser
- Click on thee dot icon > More Tools > Extensions or visit chrome://extensions page in address bar
- Toggle “Developer mode”
- Click “Update”.

Extensions will be updated immediately.
