Microsoft has integrated Internet Explorer mode into Microsoft Edge and made it available for users recently with Edge 85. The company also announced a timeline to end support for Internet Explorer and Edge Legacy. As of now, Microsoft has set up Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 10 to redirect to Edge for certain sites that no longer compatible.
In one way, this is is forcing users to new Edge, on the other side, letting organizations and users know you can browse these Legacy or incompatible sites without any issues in Modern Chromium Edge
As of now, certain sites automatically open in Edge from Internet Explorer. We can say LinkedIn which no longer supports IE as an example
- Open Internet Explorer by typing “iexplore.exe” in the Run dialog
- Visit Linkedin website
- LinkedIn suddenly opens in Edge and you’ll be notified about this with a dialog that, you’re browsing the site in Edge browser. “The website doesn’t work with Internet Explorer. Microsoft recommends continuing in Microsoft Edge to experience better speed, performance and security”

Prevent Sites Redirecting from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge
You can avoid this happening again with Internet Explorer, for that
- Use Winkey +R to open the Run dialog
- Type ” iexplorer.exe” and press enter
- Click on the gear icon (alt+X), select Internet Options
- Click on Advanced
- Scroll down to “Browsing” and uncheck “Enable third-party browser extensions”

- Click on “Apply” and “OK” to save the changes.
Keep in mind this will disable all extensions in Internet Explorer including “IEToEdgeBHO” that is responsible for the redirection.
Disable Internet Explorer Mode in Microsoft Edge
You can even go ahead disable IE mode in Edge to ensure Microsoft or Edge doesn’t do new tricks to trigger the redirect from IE to Edge for certain sites
For that
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on the three-dot icon and select Settings
- Select the “Default Browser” and make the following changes
For ” Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge”, choose “Never”
Disable “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode”.

Are you still using Internet Explorer in Windows? If so, can you tell us why?
