On October 09, 2018 Microsoft has released first Cumulative Update KB4464330 for Windows 10 1809 and is available for download via Windows Update. If you check for updates manually, it will be downloaded and installed, Redmond giant confirmed on CU support page that there are no issues with this update.
Wait! if you look at the bottom of the page, you’ll notice before installing this update you should be installing the latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU) KB4465477, which will be done by Windows Update automatically, that not happened, the update was neither downloaded or nor installed by WU as we can tell from updates history.
KB4464330 update fails to install
What we’ve noticed is KB4464330 update failed to install the first time with error 0x8024200d and the second time, it has been installed successfully as you notice that from the screenshot below.
Servicing Stack Update KB4465477 install status
Then what about SSU KB4465477? Is that mandatory?
Yes! Servicing Stack Update must be installed before installing the latest cumulative update.
“Windows Cumulative updates require that you install the latest servicing Stack Update (SSU) for your Operating system before installing the latest Cumulative Update (LCU). This helps to mitigate potential issues while installing the LCU. If you’re using Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB4465477) will be offered automatically.”
But WU hasn’t got the SSU in our case as the company mentioned.
Do I need to manually install KB4465477?
You can manually download KB4465477 by visiting this page, if not installed by Windows Update. Wait! Before that
Open Control Panel >Programs > Programs and Features and check ‘Installed Updates’
to see whether KB4465477 has been installed or not, for us, the update has been installed in ‘Installed Updates’ in Control Panel, but not in the Windows Update’s Update history section. Take a relief if that’s the case with you.
