Vertical Tabs is one of the important features of the Microsoft Edge browser. It lets you access open tabs on the left side. Till now, Edge through Tab Search inherited from Chrome lets you search through tabs in the horizontal tab bar. Microsoft now added a new option to Tab Actions Menu that now makes Vertical Tab Search possible.
Vertical Tabs in Microsoft Edge
To experience the feature,
- Launch Edge, visit Settings > appearance
- Under Customize toolbar, enable “Show tab actions menu”
- Click on the icon and select “Turn on vertical tabs”or use Shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+, ) instead.
Vertical Tabs is ideal for Laptop users. It becomes more useful and saves space when you use Tab Groups.
Edge also lets you hide the title bar for Vertical Tabs.
Search through Vertical Tabs in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge supports Tab Search, not enabled by default, here is how you can turn it on.
Enable Tab Search in Microsoft Edge
- Close Edge browser if running
- Right-click on its desktop shortcut and append this at the end in the Target field
--enable-features=msTabSearch
3. Run Edge and click on The Tab Search icon to get started.
From release to Dev version, the above steps enable search for horizontal tabs in Edge browser.
Thanks to the new Canary update that offers the “ Search tabs ” option in the Tab Actions menu that allows searching through open tabs in the Vertical layout.
Do note, you still need to run Edge 94 Canary with the above command line switch to get the option.
- If you haven’t already, switch from horizontal tab bar to Vertical
- Now, click on the Tab Actions menu, select “Search Tabs”
Search Tabs option in Tab Actions Menu - Use the search field to locate to tab you’re looking for and click. Tab Search menu allows to find and open Recently closed Tabs also. this applies to Vertical Tabs as well.
Note: The target field should be like this to enable Tab Search for Edge Canary:
"C:Users<username>AppDataLocalMicrosoftEdge SxSApplicationmsedge.exe" --enable-features=msTabSearch
