Google and Chrome use the homepage to show promotional messages and advertisements underneath the Search box. While visitors coming to Google can discover and may make use of it, but promo message on the New Tab Page in Chrome whenever you open a new tab is pretty annoying, to be honest. Google has started working on allowing users to dismiss promos on the Chrome New tab page in 2019. The feature is now enabled by default and you may close the promotional message with a click in Chrome 106 stable in 2022.
Promos on Chrome’s New Tab Page
Chrome web browser apart from showing the most used websites on New Tab Page, uses NTP to promote its products and sometimes displays emergency and non-emergency messages.
For instance, you may have seen NTP in Chrome showing a promo about Wifi Speaker in the past with a message ” Meet Google Home Max. Now in Stock” (without any option to close it). The link takes the user to Google Store for purchase.
Till now, Chrome has not provided an option [x] to get rid of these ads, you can now dismiss these promotional messages with a click by clicking on the option [ X] with your mouse.
NTP Dismiss Promo Flag (2019):
Three years back Chrome added a flag “NTP dismiss promos”, but later removed it in the same year.
The flag is still not available currently, but it has been enabled by default in all pre-release versions of Chrome including the beta.
How to Dismiss Promos on New Tab Page in Chrome (2022)
- Launch Chrome browser
- Open New Tab Page
- When you see a message, it will also come included with Dismiss option x to Close
- Just click it with the mouse, and Chrome displays a “you won’t see this specific message again” with an undo option. This goes away after a few seconds and won’t show up again unless Google pushes another one.
Keep in mind you’ll be able to delete individual Promo messages and Chrome may still show emergency messages without letting you remove them.
Chrome 106 is expected to arrive on September 27.
