Apart from Settings, about: config interface is one place to make modifications or changes to Firefox the way it works and looks. Till Firefox 86, Firefox supported showing some of the user-modified preferences but not all on the Troubleshooting Information page, starting Firefox 87, Mozilla to offer a checkbox in about:config for a user to see only modified preferences.
To speed up Firefox or tweak its interface or enable/disable a feature, users open configuration Editor and make changes to preferences.
For instance, recently we covered various articles involving about::config to
- Change Firefox skeleton UI,
- Re-enable disabled backspace key,
- Hide Other bookmarks bar on the toolbar
- activate multiple Picture -In-Picture windows
Once a pref default value is changed or if you create a new preference, keeping track of them is a difficult task.
The Troubleshooting page displays some of them, to check them,
- Visit about:support
- Scroll down and check “Important modified preferences”.
As we said above, unfortunately, these are a few.
With Firefox 71, Mozilla launched a new interface based on HTML for configuration Editor that has taken away the sorting options.
A bug was filed two years back for the organization to create a checkbox in about:config to show search results limited to modified preferences.
The checkbox, now available and appears by default in Firefox 87, here is how you can use it.
Display only modified preferences in about:config interface in Firefox 87
- Launch Firefox
- Visit about:config
- Click on “accept the risk and continue”
- Select the checkbox next to search filter to “show only modified preferences”
There used to be an add-on before the launching of Web Extensions to export all advanced preferences to CSV file, which’s not available atm.
But, you can copy and paste them to word or CSV for future reference.
You can reset all about:config preferences to default by using the steps mentioned in this article.
