Firefox 116: How to allow each extension to run on sites restricted by Mozilla

Rather than allowing all extensions on sites with restrictions set by Mozilla through Configuration Editor, you can configure each extension’s settings to circumvent the “some extensions are not allowed” message in Firefox 116 and later versions.

Recently, Mozilla launched Firefox 115 with new features, improvements, and bug fixes, including the back-end feature “Quarantined domains”.
Since Mozilla can’t monitor every add-on for security, the company is blocking malicious extensions that are targetting specific domains.

Hence, Firefox does not allow such extensions on specific websites listed in the Quarantined Domains. If you use such an extension on the affected website, you’ll notice the message.

In Firefox 115,you have no other option but to disable about:config pref to fix the issue.

Starting from Firefox 116, Mozilla shows an improved UI for the message in the Extensions Panel and provides an option in extenion’s Settings to overcome the issue.

Here is the updated message you will receive in Firefox version 116:

“some extensions are not allowed. To protect your data, some extensions can’t read or change data on this site. Use the extension’s settings to allow on sites restricted by Mozilla”.

Allow each extension to run on sites restricted by Mozilla in Firefox 116 and later

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Click on the menu and select Add-ons and Themes > Extensions
  3. Click on the affected extension, navigate to the “Run on Sites with Restrictions” setting, and select “Allow”
  4. Restart Firefox.

Firefox has introduced a new “Run on sites with Restrictions” Setting under “Details” for extensions that are blocked from accessing specific sites. The setting is only available for affected extensions, not for all extensions.

As of writing, the current Firefox version is 115. Firefox  116 is in beta and is scheduled to be released on August 1, 2023.

In case you don’t know, in addition to this change. Firefox 116 will no longer include the Performance monitor tool. Check this article for details.

What’s your take on this? Do you like the improved UI for message? Would you prefer to allow all extensions or configure each extension individually on restricted sites? Let us know in the comments below.

Final words: Firefox 116 offers a new option in each extension’s settings to allow them to run on sites restricted by Mozilla.
