Microsoft updates Edge Stable ahead of January release

Microsoft is aiming to release Microsoft Edge Stable based on Chromium 79 next year, on Janury 15, 2020,  meanwhile, the company has updated Edge addons site to beta and increased number of extensions from 160 to 244, now both stable versions of the Edge and Google Chrome are on same version 79.3945.88 now, another coincidence is Edge beta also holds the same version number.

Generally, Chromium Edge should be behind Chrome when you compare the version numbers, but that’s not the case Microsoft is ensuring new Edge is on par with Chrome browser.

Recently, on December 17, 2019, Google has updated Chrome v79 to 79.0.3945.88. If you now check “User Agent” string in edge://verison page for yet to be released Edge stable, you’ll notice it is using the same version also. What this conveys is by the time Microsoft launches Edge, all the bug fixes, new features, changes and improvements landed in Chrome will also be available in Edge as well.

Chrome and Edge Chromium stable sharing same version number

This is not the case with other Chromium based browser such as Opera where it is now based on Chrome 78.0.3904.108 while Vivaldi 2.10 is ahead with version 79.0.3945.94.
