Firefox 84 supports Multiple Picture-in-Picture Windows

Recent Firefox release brought improvements to the Picture-in-Picture feature. Mozilla is planning to make PiP mode even more awesome. Firefox version 84 allows running multiple Picture in Picture Windows. Here is how you can enable the feature in the Firefox browser.

Till now,

  • Firefox on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and Android (Fenix) supports the Picture-in-Picture feature
  • Firefox offers dedicated shortcuts to launch a video in PiP mode on Windows and Mac
  • Like Chrome, Firefox’s PIP window offers buttons in a mini-resizable window to control video playback
  • Picture in Picture button has a new look and placement with the recent update

Enable Multiple Picture-in-Picture Windows in Firefox

As of now, Firefox allows a single Picture-in-Picture window only. Mozilla is thinking of allowing multiple instances of PiP windows to make Firefox different from other web browsers.

Firefox allows multiple Picture in Picture Windows

There is no clear use case and the addition may not make sense to run videos in several tiny windows at once, but, Mozilla wants to offer a preference to the user to see if they can utilize it.

Currently, the preference is hidden in about:config and not enabled by default in Firefox 84 Nightly.

To enable and use the feature

  1. Launch Firefox
  2. Visit about:config
  3. Search for “media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.allow-multiple”
    media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.allow-multiple pref
  4. Toggle its value to “true”.
  5. Visit YouTube
  6. Open a couple of more video in Picture in Picture mode by clicking on the PIP button

As of now, Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Opera and others, don’t support multi PIP. Firefox could be the first browser to do when they roll out with a release version.
