How do I get back to Quick Start?

To get back to Quick Start after you skipped it, erase the new iPhone with Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings; it restarts at the Hello screen, where Quick Start appears again when your old iPhone is nearby.

This guide covers erasing safely, running Quick Start, the wired and backup alternatives, and what to do when the Quick Start prompt never shows.

Get back to Quick Start by erasing the new iPhone

Quick Start runs only during setup. Apple's instructions for restoring a device say that if you already set it up, you erase it first, and the same applies to Quick Start.

  1. On the new iPhone, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General, then tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  4. Enter the device passcode if asked.
  5. Tap Erase iPhone to confirm. The iPhone restarts at the Hello screen.
  6. Place your old iPhone next to it, unlocked on the Home Screen with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and follow the Quick Start prompt.

Erasing removes everything added to the new iPhone since you set it up. Back up anything new on it first, such as photos you have already taken.

Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone

After the erase, the new iPhone is back at the first setup screen, which is where Quick Start begins.

  1. On the old iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, unlock it and go to the Home Screen.
  2. Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the old one.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions that appear on the old iPhone to get started.
  4. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or your mobile network, and activate mobile service if asked.
