Download pip for PC, Windows 11/10 & Mac (Free)

The pip download you need is the Python installer from python.org, because pip 26.2.1 ships inside Python 3.14.7. Install Python on Windows 11, Windows 10 or a Mac and the pip command is already there.

There is no separate pip setup file, and nobody charges for one. When a Python install arrives without pip, a single built-in command restores it without touching the internet.

This guide covers the right installer for your machine, the install steps on Windows and Mac, the Microsoft Store route, virtual environments, offline package downloads and the usual “pip is not recognized” errors.

pip card listing version, licence and supported systems
Version 26.2.1 ships with Python 3.14.7 and runs on Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS 10.15 or later.

Which pip download do you need?

Match your situation to a row. Most readers need nothing more than the Python installer in the second row.

Your situation What to get Size
Python 3.10 or later already installed from python.org Nothing. Run py -m pip --version to see it 0 MB
No Python on a 64-bit Windows PC python-3.14.7-amd64.exe 31.7 MB
No Python on a Windows on Arm laptop python-3.14.7-arm64.exe 31.1 MB
No Python on a Mac, Apple silicon or Intel python-3.14.7-macos11.pkg 74.9 MB
Python is installed but the pip command is missing Run python -m ensurepip --upgrade, which uses the copy inside Python 0 MB

Download pip for Windows 11 and 10 from the official source

Every file below comes from python.org, the site the Python Software Foundation runs. The bundled packaging tool is inside each one.

  1. Python 3.14.7 for Windows, 64-bit installer — 31.7 MB · the file almost every Windows PC needs
  2. Python 3.14.7 for Windows on Arm — 31.1 MB · Snapdragon and other Arm laptops
  3. Python 3.14.7 for macOS, universal2 package — 74.9 MB · runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel
  4. Python install manager MSI — 9.4 MB · for offline and managed Windows environments
  5. python.org download index — every release, every platform, with checksums

Older branches, the embeddable zip and the 32-bit build are covered in the Python download guide.

How to install pip on Windows 11 and 10

The Windows installer’s Install Now option installs the standard library, the test suite, the launcher and pip together.

  1. Open the python.org downloads page and select the Windows installer for the current release.
  2. Double-click python-3.14.7-amd64.exe in your Downloads folder.
  3. Tick the box that adds Python to your PATH so the commands work in any folder.
  4. Select Install Now, which includes the bundled packaging tool.
  5. Wait for Setup was successful, then select Close.
  6. Press Windows + R, type cmd and select OK.
  7. Run py -m pip –version and read the version and interpreter path it prints.
  8. Install your first package with py -m pip install requests .

Use py -m pip rather than the bare command. It always runs against the interpreter you expect.

Install pip with the Microsoft Store or winget

The Python install manager is free in the Microsoft Store and identical to the copy on python.org. Each runtime it fetches carries its own packaging tool.

  1. Open the Python install manager listing in the Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Get, then Open when the install finishes.
  3. Or install it from a terminal with winget install 9NQ7512CXL7T -e –accept-package-agreements –disable-interactivity .
  4. Run py install 3.14 to add the current Python runtime.
  5. Run py list to confirm the runtime is registered.
  6. Run py -m pip –version to check the packaging tool that came with it.

How to verify the installer and confirm the tool is genuine

Every file on a python.org release page carries a SHA-256 checksum and a Sigstore signature. Check the file before you run it.

  1. Open the Python 3.14.7 release page and find your file in the Files table.
  2. Copy the SHA-256 value printed beside it.
  3. On Windows, open PowerShell in Downloads and run Get-FileHash .\python-3.14.7-amd64.exe -Algorithm SHA256 .
  4. On a Mac, open Terminal and run shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/python-3.14.7-macos11.pkg .
  5. Compare the two strings, delete the file if they differ, and run py -m pip –version after installing.

Which pip setup do you need on your Mac?

macOS ships /usr/bin/python3 for Apple’s own developer tools. Leave it alone and install your own Python instead.

Your Mac What to do Command
Apple silicon or Intel, macOS 10.15 or later Install python-3.14.7-macos11.pkg python3 -m pip --version
Certificate errors when installing packages Run Install Certificates.command from the /Applications/Python 3.14/ folder python3 -m pip install requests
Apple’s own python3 in /usr/bin Leave it in place and work inside a virtual environment python3 -m venv .venv

The macOS installer places a Python 3.14 folder in Applications and links the executables into /usr/local/bin/ .

How to keep packages out of your system Python

A virtual environment is a private folder with its own packages. Python bootstraps the packaging tool into every new environment unless you pass –without-pip .

  1. Open a terminal in your project folder.
  2. Run py -m venv .venv on Windows, or python3 -m venv .venv on a Mac.
  3. Activate it on Windows with .venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1 in PowerShell, or .venv\Scripts\activate.bat in Command Prompt.
  4. Activate it on a Mac with source .venv/bin/activate .
  5. Run python -m pip install -r requirements.txt to fill the environment.
  6. Run deactivate when you are finished, or read the venv documentation for the other shells.

Download packages for an offline install

The pip download command resolves a package exactly as an install would, then saves the distributions to a folder. Copy that folder to the offline machine and install from it.

Task Command Notes
Collect a package and its dependencies py -m pip download requests -d wheelhouse writes wheels and archives into the folder
Install from that folder with no network py -m pip install --no-index --find-links=wheelhouse requests the folder is the only index used
Collect for a different platform py -m pip download --only-binary=:all: --platform win_amd64 --python-version 3.14 requests -d wheelhouse set every targeting option, not just one
Silent install with the bundled tool python-3.14.7-amd64.exe /quiet Include_pip=1 PrependPath=1 Include_pip installs the bundled packaging tools
Read the full option list pip download documentation covers –platform, –abi and –implementation

Is pip free?

Yes. pip is free and open source under the MIT licence, for personal and commercial work alike. The Python installer that carries it is free as well, and the Microsoft Store listing for the Python install manager costs nothing. No licence key exists and no paid edition exists. A site asking for payment or a registration form before it hands over a Python setup file is not python.org.

Should you upgrade the bundled version or leave it alone?

Upgrade inside a virtual environment, and leave the copy your operating system installed untouched. Python 3.14.7 bundles pip 26.2.1, the current release, so a fresh install from python.org needs no upgrade. Older Python branches carry older copies, and python -m pip install –upgrade pip inside an activated environment updates that environment alone. The tool requires Python 3.10 or later, so a machine on 3.9 needs a Python upgrade first.

How to check your pip version and update it

  1. Open Terminal on a Mac, or Command Prompt on Windows.
  2. Run py -m pip –version on Windows, or python3 -m pip –version on a Mac.
  3. Read the version number and the interpreter path in the same line.
  4. Run py -m pip install –upgrade pip to move to the current release.
  5. Run py -m pip list –outdated –format columns to see which packages have newer releases.
  6. Run py -m ensurepip –upgrade instead when the command is missing entirely.

What pip can install

Packages come from the Python Package Index by default, and from two other sources on request.

Source Command When you use it
Python Package Index py -m pip install sampleproject the default for published packages
A wheel or source archive py -m pip install sampleproject-1.0-py3-none-any.whl air-gapped machines and private builds
A Git repository py -m pip install git+https://github.com/pypa/sampleproject.git@main code that is not published yet

Check the pip system requirements before you install

The tool is pure Python, so the requirements are really the requirements of the Python release that carries it.

Fix pip not working after installing Python

“pip is not recognized as an internal or external command”

The scripts folder is missing from PATH, or the generated executable was never created.

  1. Run py -m pip –version instead, which does not depend on PATH.
  2. Re-run the Python installer and select Modify.
  3. Tick pip under optional features, then tick Add Python to environment variables.
  4. Select Install, close every terminal window and open a new one.
  5. Add %LocalAppData%\Python\bin to PATH if you use the install manager.

“Python was not found” when you type python

The app execution aliases are switched off, or the WindowsApps folder left PATH.

  1. Select Start, type Manage app execution aliases and open it.
  2. Turn on Python (default) and Python install manager.
  3. Toggle them off and on again if they were already enabled.
  4. Confirm that PATH contains %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps .
  5. Use the py command, which the install manager registers separately.

The command exists but no module named pip

A redistributor stripped the bundled copy, or a failed upgrade removed it.

  1. Run python -m ensurepip –upgrade to restore it from inside Python.
  2. Run python -m ensurepip –default-pip if the short command is still missing.
  3. Read the bootstrap documentation when the module was removed too.

Packages install but your project cannot import them

The package landed in a different interpreter from the one running your code.

  1. Run py -m pip –version and note the path in brackets.
  2. Run py -m pip list to see what that interpreter actually has.
  3. Create an environment with py -m venv .venv and activate it.
  4. Install inside the activated environment, then run your script from there.

How to uninstall a package cleanly

  1. Run py -m pip list to see the exact package name and version.
  2. Run py -m pip uninstall simplejson , replacing the name with yours.
  3. Read the file list it prints and answer y at the Proceed (Y/n)? prompt.
  4. Run py -m pip list again to confirm the entry is gone.
  5. Delete the .venv folder instead when the package lives in a virtual environment.

Frequently asked questions

Is pip free?

Yes. It is free and open source under the MIT licence, and free for commercial use. The Python installer that carries it costs nothing either, and the Python install manager in the Microsoft Store is a free listing.

What is the official pip download page?

There is no separate one. The packaging tool ships inside Python, so the official download is python.org/downloads, run by the Python Software Foundation. The source code lives in the pypa organisation on GitHub.

Does pip work on Windows 11?

Yes. Python 3.14 supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, with installers for 64-bit, 32-bit and Arm PCs. Every one of those installers includes the packaging tool, and py -m pip works straight after setup.

How big is the download?

The tool adds nothing on its own, because it is already inside Python. The Windows 64-bit installer is 31.7 MB, the ARM64 installer is 31.1 MB, and the macOS universal package is 74.9 MB.

Is there a pip offline installer?

Yes, in effect. The Windows .exe and the macOS .pkg both contain it, so they install with no network at all. Use pip download to collect packages on a connected machine and –find-links to install them offline.

How do I install pip on a Mac?

Install Python 3.14.7 from python.org using the universal2 package, then run python3 -m pip –version in Terminal. Leave Apple’s /usr/bin/python3 alone, because macOS developer tools depend on it.

Is the pip download safe?

Yes, when the installer comes from python.org or the Microsoft Store listing published by the Python Software Foundation. Each release page carries a SHA-256 checksum and a Sigstore signature so you can confirm the file before running it.

What is the latest version?

Version 26.2.1, released on 4 August 2026, and it is the copy bundled with Python 3.14.7. Run py -m pip –version to see what your own machine has installed.

Why is pip not recognized after installing Python?

Windows cannot find the short command when the scripts folder is outside PATH. Use py -m pip instead, or re-run the installer, select Modify and tick the option that adds Python to your environment variables.

How do I upgrade pip?

Activate your virtual environment, then run python -m pip install –upgrade pip . When the module is missing altogether, run python -m ensurepip –upgrade , which restores it from the copy inside Python without any internet access.
