The Dell Command download for Windows 11 and Windows 10 is a free 95.4 MB package from Dell Support. Run it on a Dell Latitude, OptiPlex, Precision or XPS, and it keeps the BIOS, firmware and drivers current from one window.
Dell publishes three packages at the same version: a Universal build for Intel and AMD PCs, a separate ARM64 build for Windows 11 on Arm, and a Classic build. Each one needs the Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0 installed first.
This guide covers the official files, installing and running a first scan, silent deployment, the command line, and install fixes.

Which Dell Command Update download do you need?
Match your PC to the package. Open Settings > System > About and read System type to see whether Windows runs on an x64 or ARM-based processor.
| Your PC | Package to download | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Dell PC with an Intel or AMD processor, Windows 11 or 10 | Universal Application (P0P70) | 95.4 MB |
| Dell PC with an Arm processor, Windows 11 ARM64 | Universal Application for ARM64 (44XRV) | 98.0 MB |
| A fleet already standardised on the Classic app | Dell Command Update for Win32 (61R17) | 86.5 MB |
| Any of the above, before you install | .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0 | Separate download from Microsoft |
| A Dell home PC, such as an Inspiron | SupportAssist for Home PCs | Different app |
The ARM64 file lists Windows 11 ARM64 as its only supported system.
Check the Dell Command Update system requirements
Any supported Dell commercial PC meets the hardware side. The .NET prerequisite is what trips installs.

Download Dell Command Update from the official Dell source
Dell publishes the app on dell.com and serves the files from dl.dell.com. A copy from any other host is not Dell’s package.
- Dell Command | Update overview and download links — Dell’s knowledge base page listing every current package
- Universal Application for Intel and AMD, driver page — 95.38 MB
- Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_P0P70_WIN64_5.7.1_A00.EXE — 100,008,184 bytes
- Universal Application for ARM64, driver page — 98.01 MB

- Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0 — required before installing
How to install Dell Command Update on Windows 11 and 10
You need administrator rights. Dell puts the install at 5 to 7 minutes and asks for a restart at the end, which you can defer.
- Install the .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0 from Microsoft’s .NET download page, choosing the x64 or Arm64 Windows installer.
- Download the Universal package from the Dell driver page and save it.
- Double-click the downloaded .EXE and select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Click Install. The Welcome screen opens.
- Click Next on the Welcome screen.
- Select I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click Next.
- Click Install on the Ready to Install the Program screen.
- Click Finish on the Installation Wizard Completed screen, then restart the PC.
Search for Dell Command | Update in the Start menu to open it after the restart.
Install Dell Command Update silently on many PCs
The same package installs without any window when you pass Dell’s silent switch. Run it from an elevated Command Prompt or your deployment tool.
| Task | Command | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Silent install | Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_P0P70_WIN64_5.7.1_A00.EXE /s | Dell silent install guide |
| Silent install with a log | …A00.EXE /s /l=C:\Logs\dcu-install.txt | Dell silent install guide |
| Silent uninstall | …A00.EXE /passthrough /x /s /v”/qn” | Dell uninstall guide |
Push the .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0.8 or later before the package. Dell lists it as a prerequisite for every 5.7.1 package.
Test on one machine of each model first. BIOS updates need BitLocker handled and a restart, and a docking station update can restart the PC more than once.
How to scan for Dell updates and check your app version
The first scan is the reason to install the app. It compares your exact model against Dell’s current BIOS, firmware and driver releases.
- Plug in the power adapter. Dell blocks some updates, BIOS updates in particular, while a laptop runs on battery.
- Open Dell Command | Update from the Start menu.
- Click CHECK on the Welcome screen. The app scans system devices and determines available updates.
- Review the Selected Updates screen, grouped into Security Updates, Critical Updates, Recommended Updates and Optional Updates.
- Click View Details on any update you want to read about before installing.
- Click INSTALL and restart when the app asks.
- Open Update History later to confirm what was applied.
- Run dcu-cli.exe /version from %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Dell\CommandUpdate in an administrator Command Prompt to read the installed version.
From the same folder, dcu-cli.exe /scan lists applicable updates and dcu-cli.exe /applyUpdates installs them. The PC does not restart on its own unless you add -reboot=enable .
Should you install the Universal or Classic Dell Command Update?
Install the Universal Application. Dell releases both packages at the same version with the same .NET prerequisite, and its user guide’s download steps point to the Universal build. It is also the only variant Dell ships for Arm-based PCs. Keep the Classic Win32 package only where an existing deployment already uses it. To see which one a PC has, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and read the entry name.
Which Dell Command Update download do you need for your Mac?
Dell Command Update is a Windows application for Dell hardware. It has no macOS package, and a Mac has no Dell BIOS or drivers for it to manage.
| Your machine | What to use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A Mac on macOS | Apple’s macOS update guide | Open System Settings > General > Software Update |
| A Dell PC on Windows 11 or 10 | Universal Application (P0P70) | 95.4 MB |
| A Dell Arm PC on Windows 11 | ARM64 package (44XRV) | 98.0 MB |
Is Dell Command Update free?
Yes. Dell Command Update costs nothing. Dell publishes every package on its own support site with no licence purchase, trial period or account requirement. You accept Dell’s licence terms during setup and that is all. Any site selling a licence key or a premium edition is not Dell, and a download from outside dell.com is not the Dell package.
Fix Dell Command Update not installing or not updating
The installer stops or will not start
The .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0.8 or later is missing, which Dell lists as a hard prerequisite.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime.
- Install the 10.0 runtime from Microsoft’s .NET page if it is absent or older than 10.0.8.
- Match the runtime to the processor: x64 for Intel and AMD, Arm64 for Arm.
- Run the Dell package again.
Setup fails with an access or permission error
Dell Command Update requires administrator rights to install.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Right-click the .EXE and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
The wrong package refuses to install
The ARM64 file only supports Windows 11 ARM64, and the WIN64 file targets Intel and AMD PCs.
- Open Settings > System > About and read System type.
- Download the P0P70 package for an x64-based processor.
- Download the 44XRV package for an ARM-based processor.
A BIOS or firmware update will not apply
Some updates cannot install unless the power adapter is connected.
- Connect the Dell power adapter and leave it in.
- Click CHECK again, then INSTALL.
- For scripted runs, run dcu-cli.exe /configure -autoSuspendBitLocker=enable so BitLocker does not block the BIOS update.
Updates installed but nothing changed
Updates that need a restart stay pending until the PC restarts, and the CLI does not restart on its own.
- Restart the PC from the Start menu.
- Open Update History to confirm each item completed.
- Add -reboot=enable to dcu-cli.exe /applyUpdates when you want scripted runs to restart.
How to uninstall Dell Command Update
Removal takes a minute from Windows Settings. Administrators can do the same thing silently with the original package.
- Close Dell Command | Update if it is open.
- Open Settings from the Start menu, then Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal in the list.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Uninstall, and confirm.
- Alternatively, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the entry and click Uninstall.
- For a silent removal, run the original package with /passthrough /x /s /v”/qn” from an administrator Command Prompt.
What to use instead of Dell Command Update
The right alternative depends on whether the PC is a business model, a home model, or not a Dell at all.
| Tool | Publisher | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| SupportAssist for Home PCs | Dell | Dell home PCs, where Dell Update support ended on 31 December 2024 |
| Windows Update | Microsoft | Any Windows PC, for Windows and optional driver updates |
| Dell Update and Alienware Update | Dell | Existing installs only; Dell recommends SupportAssist instead |
Stay with Dell Command Update on Latitude, OptiPlex and Precision fleets. Its command line lets you script BIOS and driver updates across every PC.
