
This is what you need to do to keep Microsoft Edge running or open if it keeps crashing after launch/on startup when you open settings or any pages on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
Microsoft Edge is a popular browser that gets regular updates. If your Edge crashes and denies to stay open for web browsing, follow the below steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Fix Microsoft Edge Keeps Crashing on Windows 11/10
1. Disable Extensions:
New Microsoft Edge supports Extensions in Edge add-ons Store and Chrome web Store. If you’ve installed some, time to check and find the culprit that may be causing Edge to crash.
- For that,
Close Microsoft Edge and Kill its Processes in Task Manager - Right click on shortcut on desktop
- Select Properties, In Target field at end add “
--disable-extensions"
- Click Apply
Now open Edge using that shortcut.
2. Repair Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings > Installed Apps
- Find Microsoft Edge, click on three-dot icon and select “Repair”, follow the onscreen instructions.
- Microsoft Edge may get reinstalled, allow it.
3. Disable Experiments
One of the experiments Microsoft running or you enabled in edge://flags may cause Edge to break. To check and overcome this, run Microsoft Edge with without experiments on startup.
- For this
Close Microsoft Edge and Kill its Processes in Task Manager - Right click on shortcut on desktop
- Select Properties, In Target field at end add
"-- no experiments
“ - Click Apply
Now Launch Edge using that shortcut.
4. Turn off Edge Startup Boost
The feature which designed to start Edge faster may cause problem also. That is Startup Boost in Edge.
Disable it and check if Edge is working fine. For that,
- Open Settings >system and performance> disable “Startup Boost”
- Restart Edge
5. Turn off Efficiency mode
Efficiency mode in Edge tries to save battery life and it puts background tabs to sleep after certain period of inactivity. It has been reported, this feature also can cause issues. To isolate issue with Efficiency mode, disable it
- Visit Settings > System and performance > Optimize Performance,
- disable “Efficiency mode”
6. Use third-party uninstaller
As last resort, uninstall Edge using Advanced Uninstaller. You can use Revo Uninstaller for the same. Free version available comes with important Hunter mode.
- Open Revo uninstaller
- Click Hunter mode
- Point its icon on Edge desktop shortcut or taskbar icon and release to access context menu with options to “uninstall”, “stop auto starting” and “kill and delete process”. Choose the first option.
- When hunter mode window opens, select Microsoft Edge, choose scanning mode and click “next” and follow instructions on screen.
Note: Backup your browsing data, as you may want to delete it if uninstall doesn’t work first time without browsing data removal.
After that, open another browser and download Edge and reinstall it.
