Firefox 83 brings HTTPS-Only Mode, Page load improvements and more

Mozilla will release Firefox 83 for Windows, Mac, and Linux tomorrow. The version comes with an improved JavaScript engine, that resutls in improved page loads and responsiveness, and memory usage. Here is what the version is bringing to the table.

Warp

Mozilla worked on a project named Warp on Spridermonkey JavaScript engine,

Warp has improved

  • Page load performance by 15%
  • Page responsiveness by 12%
  • Memory usage by 18%

Mozilla claims when they enabled Warp, it noticed

  1. Google Docs loads 20% faster.
  2. The page responsiveness and load improvements for JS intensive sites such as Netflix and Reddit.

HTTPS-Only Mode

HTTPS -only mode no longer experimental. It is now available in Settings, though not enabled by default.

The security-enhancing mode ensures you always visit the HTTPS version of the Site.

For instance, with HTTPS-only mode enabled, if you visit an HTTP site, it will be upgraded to the HTTPS site automatically.

If a site you visit doesn’t support HTTPS, you’ll be warned about that with the “Secure Connection Not Available” error page with options to go back and continue to the site.

To enable HTTPS-Only Mode in Firefox

  1. Click on Menu
  2. Select Options
  3. Privacy and Security > HTTPS-Only Mode
  4. Select “HTTPS -only mode in all Windows” or “Enable HTTPS-only Mode in private windows only”

Pinch to Zoom

From this version, Firefox supports Pinch to Zoom for Windows Touchscreen and touchpads on Mac. Use the pinch-to-zoom feature to Zoom in and out of web pages on touch devices

Pocket Recommendations expanded to users in India. Users see stories curated by the pocket team under the Recommended by a Pocket section on New Tab Page.

Firefox update rolls out WebRender to more users on Windows 7 and Windows 8 and macOS10.12 to 10.15.

other notable changes are:

  • You can now use the arrow keys to fast forward and rewind the video in Picture-in-Picture mode.
  • When you present your screen in a video conference in Firefox, the browser shows an improved user interface that shows which displays or devices are shared.
