Microsoft brought Windows lock screen Spotlight images to Edge’s new tab page, with Bing daily background, it looks even more beautiful. Here are the new features and improvements loaded for Edge New Tab Page in pre-release channels.
Edge New Tab Page gets Custom themes support and more

New Microsoft Edge supports custom themes but not the New Tab Page. Edge’s new tab has recently received custom themes support.
In other words, if you install a theme from the Chrome web store in Edge, you can now apply it to NTP, here is how.
- Launch Edge
- Open New Tab page
- Click on page layout settings
- Choose Custom > Custom theme
Edge NTP is overloaded with news feed, top sites, and Bing image of the day. Considering all these, to ensure a faster and better experience with the new tab, Edge now preloads New Tab contents in the background even before opening it.
The browser has a “Preload new tab page for a faster experience” setting enabled by default in New Tab Settings.
Recently Microsoft showed recommended searches and Skype Meet Now button to some Edge Insiders on a new tab, to hint it will showcase new features and tips. Actually, you can call these as ads, but Microsoft thinks they are “New Tab tips”.
After the feedback, Microsoft added an option to disable these at Page Settings > Advanced > New tab tips.
While the custom background option for the new tab has not been available for a long time, this could well be coming with Edge 86 update.
