Microsoft enables Chrome themes support in Edge Canary

You no longer need to rely on a flag to install themes from Chrome Web Store in Microsoft Edge, today, Microsoft enabled Chrome themes support by default in Edge Canary 86.0.593.0

New Microsoft Edge based on Chromium comes with two default themes: Light and Dark but follows Operating System theme by default. Other than these, Edge doesn’t support installing custom themes in the browser.

Beginning from the release, Microsoft Edge supported Chrome Extensions. Which made it easier for users to visit Chrome Web Store and install desired extensions. Since the past few months, the company is building up its own Add-ons Store. The Edge add-ons Store now contains more than a thousand extensions from different categories.

Users requested Microsoft to add support for themes in Chrome Web Store too, which the company has listened to and added a flag for the same in the Edge Canary version.

The flag named “Allow installation of external themes” works in all channels, including Edge Stable. This flag soon may be redundant as the company enabled it by default in the Edge Canary version today.

If you’re using Canary version of Edge,

1. Simply visit Chrome Web Store

2. Select Themes,

3. Select a theme (you can also choose one from 14 themes prepared by the Chrome team) and click  “Add to Chrome”. Voila!, the theme will be installed.

To Uninstall or remove an installed theme from Edge

1. Launch Microsoft Edge browser

2. Visit Settings > Appearance, click on the “Remove” button opposite to “Custom theme”, the default theme will be restored.

What Microsoft needs to do going forward is, it should update the message it shows on top of Chrome Web Store in Edge to “You can now add extensions and themes from Chrome Web Store to Microsoft Edge- click ‘Add to Chrome’ “.
