This Microsoft Edge team is acting on the insiders feedback quickly, they’ve already told in the last week’s top feedback post that “Add the ability to turn off the news feed on New Tab Page” is “Under review”, well, it’s here today for some users via controlled rollouts.
Like old Microsoft Edge, Chromium-based Edge also shows news on the New Tab Page, but like the predecessor, its successor doesn’t allow to disable it permanently. You can make the news not to appear when you don’t scroll or by choosing the custom layout and by enabling Local New Tab Page flag, but those are temporary solutions.
Users requested Edge team to provide an option to disable feeds on NTP, as we said above, the new settings to control news feed visibility on start page are now being rolling out to users and already available to some.
From the screenshot given below from this Reddit thread, you can notice custom layout in the Page Settings menu now offers “Off” setting along with other, for “Show feeds”.
All in all, NTP Custom settings section to provide the following choices to users for news feed
- Content visible: means, news feed are always shown by default.
- Feed headings only: the thing itself is self-explanatory.
- Only on scroll.
- Off.
To get rid of the News from the New Tab Page in Microsoft Edge Chromium
1. Launch new Edge browser, open a new tab
2. Click on the cogwheel, under Custom, for Show feeds, select “Off”, done.
Since Edge allows to customize New Tab Page appearance from Settings page also, expect the new options to available on it, if the feature is available to you.
BTW, here is how the current New Tab Page settings look like with Custom chosen.
