After Vivaldi 2.0 stable is out, Vivaldi team has started working on 2.1 version, newly released snapshot 2.1.1332.4 enables Picture in Picture [PIP] mode in the browser and allows to create notes from Quick Commands.
Vivaldi 2.1 snapshot available with Picture in Picture mode
If you know Picture in Picture feature in Chrome browser, which Google recently made available with Chrome 69, Vivaldi 2.1 based on Chromium 70, uses that. Here is how you can test PIP in Vivaldi browser.
1. Ensure you’re using latest Vivaldi snapshot
2. Visit YouTube and play a video, right click twice to get the context menu that contains Picture in Picture option and select it.
3. Enjoy watching the video in a floating window, while the original video shows the message ” This video is playing in Picture-in-Picture mode”
Chrome Picture in Picture in Extension
To avoid opening the context menu two times for a video on YouTube, you can install this extension developed by Chrome Evangelist, Francois Beaufort. The extension adds a button to the toolbar and negates the need of right-clicking on the video.
Good news coming as we’ve felt Opera Video Pop Out is better than Chrome Picture in Picture mode, according to the new specification, PIP feature will get a custom button and gives better control experience for the user.
You can download Vivaldi 2.1 snapshot from here.
In other news, Google has removed the big overlay play button in media controls on Chrome desktop and moved it back to bottom left corner, the change has been already landed in Chrome Canary.
Sweet!! Appreciate the info!
I’ve been using PIP in Chrome Dev for some time now and I’m a big fan. I can watch/listen to vlogs while using a different browser to surf.
And it looks like Vivaldi reset the defaults for the flags that would have otherwise needed changing for PIP to work. Nice touch.
