Mozilla is constantly working to improve the Picture in Picture feature in Firefox. To the latest, the company is adding more playback controls for a better user experience. These controls include video duration, rewind, and full-screen options.

Firefox Picture in Picture new full Playback controls

Firefox introduced Picture in Picture three years back.

Mozilla added captions and subtitles support for YouTube and other websites to Picture in Picture.

Till now, when using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode in Firefox, users could only navigate back to the original tab, pause, and mute the video from the PiP window by hovering over it.

However, these limited controls did not meet the needs of all users.

Many have requested additional controls such as a seek bar for skipping forward and backward, as well as the ability to view the video in full-screen mode directly from the PiP window.

To address these requests, Firefox has added new features to the PiP mode.

Now, users can enjoy a more comprehensive set of controls while using PiP, including the ability to skip forward and backward in the video using the seek bar.

Additionally, users can now view the video in full-screen mode directly from the PiP window.

  1. Seek bar
  2. You can now  rewind the video using the seek bar slider
  3. The PiP window displays the duration of the video in h:mm: ss over the seek bar, which is dynamically updated as you rewind and go forward and backward. This allows you to easily gauge how much of the video has been played and how much time is remaining.
  4. You can skip forward and backward by 5 seconds at a time.
  5.  You can now enter full screen mode from the Picture in Picture  by double-clicking the icon

Mozilla may ship these Picture in Picture in Controls in Firefox version 112, which is expected to launch on April 11, 2023.

Summary: Mozilla is enhancing the Picture in Picture experience in Firefox by providing controls for rewinding, going full screen, and checking video duration. These controls have been requested by many users and may be included in Firefox version 112 or later.
