After requests from users, Mozilla has added seek buttons to go forward and backward for 5 seconds and Fullscreen control to Firefox Picture-in-Picture mode. Here is how you can enable these controls for PiP in Firefox. The organization is targetting seek video buttons for Firefox 106.
Till now Firefox Picture in Picture window displays four controls when captions are enabled: Back to Tab, Play, Mute, and Subtitles.
But, PiP lacks buttons to go forward and back in a video, you can still achieve this with keyboard shortcuts.
After enabling subtitles and captions support for YouTube, Netflix, Prime, and others and the ability to change captions font size, now Firefox is adding improved video controls to PiP. Here is how you can turn them on.
How to enable Seek buttons for Picture-in-picture in Firefox
- Launch Firefox
- Visit about:config
- Select the check box and click “Accept the Risk and Continue”
- Search for improved,
- Toggle
media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.improved-video-controls.enabled pref value to true. - Close the PiP window and reopen or restart Firefox
How to seek forward and backward a PiP Video in Firefox
- Now play any video
- Hover over it and click on the PiP button to open the video
- You can now notice new seek forward, seek backward and fullscreen buttons in addition to already existing controls. You can use those to rewind, fast forward for 5 seconds, and enter PiP in full-screen mode.
Note: To rewind and progress for 10% you need to use the below shortcuts:
Ctrl+ <- – seeks back 10%
Ctrl+ -> – seek forward 10%
You can also use the Home and End buttons on the keyboard to skip to the beginning and end of the video.
Seek bar: Most users are also demanding a seek/progress bar for PiP, the company is working on it as part of full playback controls. As of now, no ETA info is available about that.
As mentioned above, Firefox is planning to ship Seek and fullscreen controls for PiP with Firefox 106. Version 106 is scheduled to release on October 18, 2022.
