Firefox adds Mute button to Picture in Picture Video

Within days after releasing Firefox 71 with Picture in Picture video on Windows, Mozilla has started adding more features to PiP. The browser feature which works on all video sites including YouTube, Netflix, Vimeo etc, has got the Mute button or Audio toggle in Firefox 73 which is on Nightly. The new button can be enabled and you can use it to mute the playing video in Picture in Picture mode in the Firefox browser.

As of now, In the stable and Nightly versions of Firefox, PiP window displays controls to go back to the origin tab, pause/play video and close button to exit PIP mode. Google Chrome also offers the same buttons for Picture-in-Picture, although the browser once supported Mute and Skip Ad buttons, it’s no longer the case right now.

Mozilla now has added the ability to silence the video playing in mini-window in Nightly version, here is how you can enable Mute button in Firefox Picture-in-Picture mode

1. Ensure you’re using latest Firefox Nightly

2. Visit about:config

3. Search for “toggle”, and enable “media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.audio-toggle.enabled” preference

4. Restart the browser,

Now visit YouTube, play any video, hover over it and click on blue PIP icon,

For the video playing in the overlay, you can see the new volume icon, click on it turn off audio for that video.
