When you upgrade to Windows 11, you’ll notice the taskbar icons and Start Menu are centered. The new OS with modern design comes with Search, Task View, Widgets, and Microsoft Teams Chat Integrated items on the taskbar pinned by default. The search icon on hover over with mouse shows three recent searches you’ve done recently. If you found that annoying or unwanted as it comes in your way when you hover over taskbar icons, you can disable or turn it off, Microsoft is offering a setting for the same.
After the desktop and start menu, you may pin the most used programs to the taskbar for quick launch. Windows 11 by default adds some items out of the box such as Widgets, Start, and Windows Search.
In case you don’t know, first thing first, here is how you can add a Search icon to the taskbar
How to show Search icon on Windows 11 taskbar
- Right-click on empty space on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings
- Under taskbar items, toggle Search to on. Similarly, you can make other items show up on the taskbar.

The popup window or hover over menu includes a search box that invokes a full-fledged Search dialog. Microsoft integrated the search box also into Windows 11 Start Menu.
You can use Win+S to open Windows Search.
So, there are many ways to bring up Windows 11 Search dialog, but the window that appears when you hover over the search icon may never be useful with three searches. If you found it the same, here is how you can disable it. You can restore the default behavior whenever you want.
- Right-click on the taskbar and select “Taskbar settings“
- Click on Taskbar behaviors
- Uncheck, “Show recent searches when I hover over the search icon”

The above setting is availble, and enabled by default from Windows 11 dev channel build 22468 onwards.
