If you use Microsoft Edge and share your device, here is good news for you. Unauthorized users can log on to websites by using the passwords saved to Edge. To prevent this, Microsoft added another layer of security to Edge. This requires the user to enter an Operating System password.
When you visit a website and enter login credentials, Edge auto-fills them when you visit next time.
The Passwords saved to Edge can be found at edge://settings/passwords.
But, if you’re using a shared device, Microsoft Edge has added an optional setting that requires entering a computer password for Edge to autofill Passwords on websites.
The optional Setting is available on the Password Management page in Edge Canary and Dev. Here’s how you can enable and try it out.
Edge needs to verify you to autofill passwords
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on Settings and more
- Select Settings
- Visit Profiles > Passwords > select “Require Authentication”
- Depending on your convenience, choose when you should be prompted to enter Windows Password from “Always”, “Once every minute“, and “Once every session.”
You’ll be asked to prove your identity and enter OS credentials to update Autofill settings.
“You are trying to update your autofill settings. Kindly first confirm your identity by providing your OS credentials and authenticating yourself.”
After that, when Edge tries to fill in a Password on the website, you’ll be prompted to enter a password to verify that’s you using the Edge on your device.
“Microsoft Edge is trying to fill passwords.”
Once you’re verified then only the password will be filled in.
If you’re the only single person using your device, you may not find this extra privacy measure useful.
