When you launch Microsoft Edge Chromium, it may show a profile error indicating that “Some features may not be available. Something went wrong“. While the issue may not affect the way Edge functions, the dialog indeed can annoy users, to be honest.
What you need to know:
- Microsoft Edge is showing profile error for some on startup
- Only a few users affected
- Edge dev and Canary are affected. The issue first appeared on version number 90.0. 794.0
- Seems Edge Edge Stable not affected
Microsoft Edge comes with profiles support. You can create different profiles for your needs.
For instance, you can create separate profiles for work and home.
The browser also supports Automatic Profile Switching, you can configure Edge for this and you can set a default profile for external links in Profile preferences in Settings
Microsoft Edge’s Profile error on Startup
Coming to the article, to fix the performance issue caused by DNS over HTTPS configuration, the Edge team quietly disabled alternate DNS providers such as Google DNS, Cloudflare, and Quad9.
While that change went unnoticed, some users running Edge 90 Canary, and dev hit with an issue related to profile. This may happen when Edge is checking for updates or if you’re performing a manual check for the same.
Though the reason for the error is unknown, as of today, the issue has been fixed in Canary and in Dev also according to user reports.

If you’re still seeing the issue, update Edge to the latest version by following the steps given below.
- Launch Edge
- Click on Settings and more (three-dot) icon
- Select Settings
- Click About Microsoft Edge, allow Edge to check for updates, and let it install.
- Restart your browser when prompted.
Luckily, the issue not present or carried to stable and beta versions.
So if you’re above mentioned Edge insider channels, and affected, updating them will resolve the issue for you.
If you’re still seeing this error, you may need to wait for the next update to fix it.
