Recently Microsoft announced a list of improvements they’re going to deliver to Edge Preview builds in the months to come, the company promised to fix the Administrator mode detected notification received by users on every launch of browser, MS is now testing that behind a flag Edge canary. The “De-elevate browser on launch” flag when enabled, relaunches the browser as logged in user when it detects browser is running with admin privileges.

When you try to launch Edge browser, you may receive an alert saying that “Administrator mode detected “and the dialog suggests to “Close Microsfot Edge and relaunch in run non-administarator mode for best performance.”
While this issue can happen to most when UAC is turned off, the warning has persisted for some on each startup of browser. Microsoft Edge team has suggested the following workarounds to overcome the issue:
- Set UAC level to “Notify me when apps try to make changes to my computer”
- Create a standard account on Windows and run the browser.
FYI, due to security reasons, you shouldn’t be running the Edge browser as an administator and the warning from the browser makes sense, here is why:
Microsoft Edge with elevated previlages can access system files and other protected areas in Windows, there is a chance for apps you download from Edge to inherit these prelivages and cause damage to you by running malware.
Disable Microsoft Edge’s Administrator Mode detected message
Edge team now testing the fix for this in Canary version, the company has already applied the fix, but if you’re facing the issue right now,
1. Visit edge://flags page
2. Search for “elevate”,
3. In the highlighted results, for “De-elevate browser on launch” , choose “Enabled “and restart the browser.

If the Edge brower launched in admin mode unintentionally by user, it will be relaunched automatically as the currently logged-in user.
