Finally, Internet Explorer Mode now works in Microsoft Edge Dev

The Internet Explorer Mode announced by Microsoft at Build 2019 is now available in latest Microsoft Edge Dev to build 77.0.212.2 and working on Windows 10. It was noticed before that IE mode functioned in Windows 10 insider builds only but this is not the case as we can confirm it is now available in the dev build (not Canary) on Windows 10 May 2019 Update version 1903.

Microsoft integrated IE mode into Chromium Edge for legacy apps and websites to work without need to open them manually in Internet Explorer. The feature requires Internet Explorer 11 to present on the backend to work and supports all IE document modes:  IE7 mode, IE8 mode, IE9 mode, IE10 mode, and IE11 mode.

Earlier we’ve reported it was possible to open websites in Internet Explorer from Edge browser when IE integration flag is enabled, now the feature works flawlessly when you choose “IE mode” setting for that flag.

Without any ado, to see IE mode in action in Microsoft Edge Chromium Preview build

1. Ensure you updated to latest Chromium Microsoft Edge Dev build

2.Visit edge://flags page

3. Type “IE” in the search box, for “Enable IE Integration” flag, choose “IE Mode”,

Choose IE mode for Enable IE Integration flag

4. Restart the browser,

5. Now load any website in the browser, click on ellipses menu > More Tools and select ” Show this page using Internet Explorer”

6. That site will open in a new tab with IE icon in the address bar, which on hover says browser is in “Internet Explorer mode”.

When clicked on the icon, it shows ” This page is open in Internet Explorer mode” and “allows organizational sites that only work in Internet Explorer to be opened in Microsoft Edge”.  You can notice Edge Chromium using “Document Mode (11)” in the screenshot.

IE mode aimed at enterprises triggers only when customers encounter sites that present in Enterprise mode list configured by IT admins, If you stumbled across a site that’s not in the list, Edge Chromium opens that site. When it comes to end-users, they can open any site from Edge in IE mode provided, that site works in IE 11.
