How to Enable Recommended Extensions in Add-ons Manager in Firefox Nightly

A Month back Mozilla announced about Recommended Extensions Program and said they’re going to display some high quality, secure extensions (after a manual review) to users on AMO, SUMO and in Firefox browser. The recommended extensions can now be enabled and seen in Firefox 68 Nightly browser, here is how.

Get add-ons page now is Recommendations

Till now AMO remotely displayed extensions in Get Add-ons Page in a frame, this no longer the case as of today, the company has changed Discovery pane or DiscoPane to “Recommendations” and made it part of about:addons.

The Recommendations page you see in Nightly is different to what you see when you enable a hidden preference. The pref in question when enabled, not only shows user counts and ratings but also displays first set of extensions chosen by Mozilla as part of Recommended Extensions Programs.

Enable Recommended Extensions in Add-ons Manager in Firefox 68

1. Visit about:config

2. Find the preference extensions.htmlaboutaddons.discover.enabled and change its value to “true”

3. Reload about:addons page to see recommended extensions loading slowly.

For us, Mozilla recommended Google Translate, Tree-style Tab, Bitwarden and Feedbro, these may not be recommended extensions and could be different to you and information it displays about feature is also quite new:

“Extensions and themes are like apps for your browser, and they let you protect passwords, download videos, find deals, block annoying ads, change how your browser looks, and much more. These small software programs are often developed by a third party. Here is a selection Firefox recommends for exceptional security, performance and functional”

Mozilla has put more effort on redesigning disco pane in the past, but we feel users may never check the Recommendations section in the first place, Mozilla has to come up with some numbers to say how many actually seen these.

Note: You don’t need to be using HTML version of about:addons for the recommended extensions to be displayed, but by turning it on you can able to see new about:addons design featuring report button for extensions and themes.

After extension recommendation notifications, Mozilla now coming up with recommended extensions program, what do you say on this?
