Windows 10 Photos App Freezes, crashes & Shows White screen sometimes

Recent Photos App update version 2020.20070.10002.0 made the app worse. The App already takes ages to open photos, it is now hanging and sometimes shows a white screen instead of Picture.

When compared with Photos app with modern UI that is packed with features, the built-in Windows Photo Viewer does a good job of displaying the Photos quickly. The Photos app takes more time to open a photo and annoys the users the most.

Microsoft continuously pushes updates to Photo App in the Microsoft Store. Recently the app received an update and isn’t working great.

For instance, it just can’t display the picture, shows a white screen in the Photos App window instead. You can check the screenshot below which we experienced before writing this article. The same has been reported by a user on Reddit today.

There are reports on Answers forums that Photos App in Windows 10 2004 isn’t working [1] [2], this may be nothing to do with a May 2020 Update but could be due to recent update, which we cannot confirm. Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged this issue.

Meanwhile, if you’re noticing constant crashes, freezes and white screen with Photos App, you may have to do the following

I. Open Microsoft Store, check for updates and download and install updates for Photos App if available.

II. 1. Open  Settings > Apps

2. Search for Photos, click on Microsoft Photos > Advanced Options

3. Click on Repair and then Reset.
