Last year, Google has made available Application Launcher for Drive Chrome extension, this extension lets you open files directly from Google Drive into the compatible application installed on your computer. Search engine giant has added this ability to Google Drive Viewer as well.
For this feature to work on Mac or PC, you need to be using Google Drive v1.23+ on Mac or PC., current exact version is 1.24.9931.5480. Install Drive and sync files.

“Then, visit Google Drive in your Chrome browser and open a file in Google Drive preview mode. When you click on the “Open with” menu on top, you’ll see a list of compatible applications on your computer that can open it or just click “Open” to choose the default application.”
