If you’re overwhelmed by the number of tabs open and unable to control them, the “Tab Islands” feature in Opera browser takes care of that and improves your productivity. The article details Tab Islands in the newly launched “Opera One” browser on dekstop and how to disable it if you don’t like it.
What is Tab Islands?
Opera Software has launched Opera One browser with AI, Aria, modular design, Tab Islands, and more.
Auto islands: When you open tabs from a website or webpage, they’ll be grouped automatically. Chrome does this with an auto tab grouping feature. Opera has a name for this feature for its new AI browser in Opera one called Tab Islands.
Based on context, Opera organizes tabs into different groups or islands. You can create Tab Islands for research or project work or vacation
The new feature in Opera allows users to “collapse” them to save space.
Users can save tabs in Island to Pinboards and Speed Dial folders.
The island also allows you to copy all tab URLs in one go.
Click on the vertical bar to collapse tabs and right-click on it to get the save and copy options.
You can also manually group tabs and create islands, the following way:
- Hold the Ctrl button and select multiple tabs
- Right-click on selected tabs and select “Create Island”.
Why you may want to disable Tab Islands in Opera?
Since Opera groups tabs automatically, if you don’t want that to happen, you’ve to disable Tab Islands. Opera One allows you to do that, here is how.
How to disable Opera’s Tab Islands feature
- Click on the Opera menu icon and select “Settings”
- Click on “Browser”
- Navigate to User Interface,
- Toggle off “Automatically create tab islands” to disable Tab islands.
Automatically create tab Islands setting
Keep in mind, this won’t remove already created Tab Islands, you’ve to remove them on your own, otherwise, they’ll still show up when you launch Opera next time, but no new Tab Islands will be automatically formed from now onwards.
You can still able to create Tab Islands manually in Opera using the steps outlined above.
Note: Workspaces and Tab Islands are different Opera browser features.
