After offering Preview Update KB4577063 earlier this month, Microsoft today, released October Patch Tuesday Updates for Windows 10 2004 and earlier versions, and are available for manual download and via Windows Update. Cumulative Update KB4579311 comes with a bunch of improvements and security fixes.

The security update
- Updates to improve security when using Microsoft Office products and when Windows performs basic operations
- Updates for verifying passwords and usernames
- Addresses an issue with a possible elevation of privilege in Win32.
- Addresses an issue with creating null ports using the user interface
- Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Media, Microsoft Graphic Component, Windows Authentication, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Kernel, and Windows Virtualization
- Addresses an issue with the Group Policy service that might recursively delete critical files in alphabetical order from %systemroot%System32. This issue occurs when a policy has been configured to delete cached profiles. These file deletions might cause stop error “0x5A (CRTICIAL_SERVICE_FAILED) boot failures.

How to get KB4579311 update on Windows 10 2004
- Click on Start, search for Settings, and open it.
- Click Update & Security
- Click “check for updates”

Windows Update fetches the CU along with .NET Framework update and Security update for Flash Player
Once the updates are downloaded, you’ll have the Update and Shutdown, and Update and Restart options in the Power menu in Start to apply. Select either to install the Patch Tuesday, October 2020 Updates.

The update is also available on the Microsoft Update Catalog website for manual download to mass install on multiple machines offline.

Microsoft has also released KB4579311 (build 19042.572) for Windows 10 20H2 to insiders in the beta and release Preview channels. The update includes the same set of fixes and improvements as above.
