Recently we’ve reported Google Chrome will offer an option in its Omnibox context menu to let users see websites full URL in the address bar, the initial implementation landed for the related flag in Chromium isn’t great where you need to select “Show URL” option every time in right-click menu of Omnibox when needed, a better method to permanently show website addresses has been implemented by Chromium team and is landed today in Chrome Canary 83, where enabling the flag and restarting the browser activates “Always Show full URLs option” for a Chrome profile automatically across the sessions including incognito on all devices.
In the eliding www/m subdomains feedback bug created by Google in September 2018, many users shared their displeasure over hiding of protocol information for websites the Chrome address bar. A user has said this recently
“This feature is ridiculous not to be able to toggle off. Seriously, the whole thread full of upset people and this thing is still around? I’m a software engineer as well and I can’t stand not seeing the adequate information for the URL I’m currently on – including protocol information. And selecting the url to copy any part of it is implemented in a way (shifting the text as you select) like the author wants to drive the users insane when doing that on a daily basis. The whole thing is absurd. I don’t understand why is this discussion even exist – just add the bloody option toggle ffs.”
Google employee revealed they’re working on it “folks, we’re working on it” to point to new “implement Omnibox context menu option to always show full URLs” issue. The new bug was created on March 14, 2020, and within a few days, a new flag was made available, now a CL landed for the same in Chrome Canary.
Do note this will be a feature for Windows, Mac, and Linux with priority set to 3 and is targetted for Chrome 83. With Chrome 82 release skipped, Chrome 83 stable may get this option by default, meanwhile, you should be using the latest Chrome Canary to activate the feature.
1. visit chrome://flags/#omnibox-context-menu-show-full-urls
2. Select” Enabled” and restart the browser.
The “Always show full URLs” option will be enabled and can be seen in the address bar context menu checked, you can uncheck it if you don’t want to see full URL of websites in Omnibox.
