Chrome 83 offers an option to see full URL in Address bar

Google Chrome browser by default doesn’t show https://, WWW and http:// prefixes for Website URLs in its address bar, if a site is fully secure it shows a padlock icon in place of https://, similarly, Chrome shows “Not secure” text for unencrypted websites. Though users adopted for this change over the years, they did oppose hiding WWW for URLs in the address bar. For some period of time, the Chromium team has allowed users to see https:// & WWW in the Omnibox via a temporary “Omnibox UI-Hide Steady-State URL Scheme and Trivial Subdomains” flag.

The flag is currently not available, while one way to see a webpage full URL in the address bar of Chrome is to install Google’s Suspicious Site Reporter extension, another way is clicking after domain name in the address bar, in addition to these, Google is now providing a built-in option on Omnibox context menu via a flag in Chrome 83 Canary which when selected, shows the whole URL of the site.

Enable Show URL option in the Omnibox context menu in Chrome

1. Visit chrome://flags page

2. Load chrome://flags/#omnibox-context-menu-show-full-urls

3. Select Enabled and restart the browser.

The flag in question, when turned on, does this according to the given description:” Provides an Omnibox context menu option that prevents URL elisions. – Mac, Windows, Linux and Chrome OS”.

After relaunching Chrome, visit any website, select domain in Omnibox and right-click to notice “Show URL” option, select it, clicking any other area on webpage restores default state for URL.

Even though both Chromium and Chrome Canary are on same version number 83.0.4090.0, the flag has worked for us in Chromium but not in Canary, you should expect the Show URL option to appear soon.
