Google Chrome adds dark theme to Reader Mode

After a long time, the Chromium team has provided options to change page font, text size and background theme in Reader Mode in Google Chrome browser.

Google is working to bring Reader Mode to Chrome browser on the desktop platform, the feature to read webpages without clutter is already available for Chrome on Android with the name “simplified view”.

Chrome Reader Mode Styling menu with dark theme selected

Chrome on the desktop offers Reader Mode (still behind a flag and can be enabled in Stable version also) powered by Dom Distiller. When a page supports reading mode, Chrome shows an icon in the address bar to activate the feature, the option to ” Toggle distilled page contents” is also available in the menu wi th the same name.

The feature lacks control to adjust page text size and change font and theme options, the latest update to Canary has added that.

If you now visit a page in latest Chrome Canary and click on three vertical lines icon in address bar, you’ll now see “A” letter above the page, clicking it brings “Reader Mode Styling” menu with options to change font from default Sans Serif or Serif or Monospace and you’ll be allowed to switch between light, Sepia and dark themes.

You can also able to drag the slider towards the right to increase text size

The commit for “Add dialog for Adjusting Reader Mode’s appearance” notes “The slider is a placeholder and will likely be replaced by paper-slider in the future”.

On the other hand, Chromium-based Edge also offers Reader View and offers text preferences to change font size and page theme.
