Fonts look blurry in Chrome 69 after update? Google is working on it

Last updated on September 12, 2018 By Venkat

If you’ve just updated Chrome browser to version 69 and noticed fonts/text look blurry in Chrome browser, you’re not alone! Windows 10 users who have set DPI scaling to more than 125%, have this issue and Google has acknowledged and is working on it. The news is Chrome 70 has the fix for this issue, we’re not sure whether Chromium team pushes that fix with a new update to current Chrome version or provides a workaround for same or users may have to wait till the next Chrome version releases.

BTW if you’re a Mac user, has Chrome now displaying PDFs properly without showing white screen or blank page after some time as that happened in Chrome 68?

Fonts blurry in Chrome 69

Issue reported: “Font rendering is broken, antialias messed up, blurry, weird”

Description: “Blurry text content, antialias messed up. Using Windows 10 in hight DPI mode at 125% scaling FHD resolution”

Windows OS and Chrome version: Windows 10 and Chrome 69.0.3497.81

Fix: N/A

We’re able to reproduce the issue by setting scale and layout to 125%, reverting to 100% fixed the issue, this may not apply to your monitor as doing this may reduce the font size and make the text to look small.

Possible workarounds

You can try to below workarounds to see if that solves the issue for you, we’re not guaranteeing you they’ll work.

1. Open Settings > Display > Scale and layout

2. Change scaling to 100% to see that solves the issue.

OR

3. Go to step 1, click Advanced Scaling Settings

turn ON ‘Let Windows try to fix apps so they’re not blurry’, under Fix Scaling for apps.

II. Launch Chrome by appending the following to Target field in the shortcut properties dialog

chrome.exe /high-dpi-support=1 /force-device-scale-factor=1

This has worked in the past for Chrome 54 when it looked Zoomed In, we’re not sure that will work or not this time for the current Chrome version which has the issue.

You can follow this bug for more details.

UPDATE: Chromium team has fixed the issue, you should expect Google to release an update anytime soon to Chrome.

I may have found a fix, Under “Adjust the appearance and performance of windows” do you have “Smooth edges of screen fonts” disabled? I see a huge difference in chrome fonts when I check and unchecked this, with this option unchecked I was barely able to read any text in chrome.
