Till now Microsoft Edge browser allows to import bookmarks from other browsers into it and also lets you set a particular search engine as default except Google, Edge browser in Windows 10 build 10162 (previous build 10158 also offers that option but from within Settings, not in the New Tab Page) lets you set its New Tab Page to blank one, here is how you can do it.
Set Microsoft Edge new tab to blank page
1. Open new tab page in Edge browser
2. Click ‘customise’ button, select ‘a blank page’.
3. Click ‘Save changes’.
Or
Click on … icon > Settings, scroll down a bit, and choose ‘ a blank page’ under ‘Open news tabs with’.
Have you found Edge browser new tab page useful with Top sites and News feed?
I do not want top sites or News on my start side with Edge browser. How I can start with abput blank, like IE browser or others?

I want the new tab to open a website of my choice
Seems that’s not possible or Edge is not allowing by restricting open with new tab options to ‘Top sites and suggested content’, ‘Top sites’ and a blank page.
I’ve never understood why Google or Microsoft make it difficult to change what page opens when you click “new tab.” Do they think people will believe that feature cannot exist in browsers due to hardware constraints? What kind of BS is “Top sites and suggested content?” Firefox isn’t much better. You have to go to the config page. It’s not an option in the “Options > General” page.
Google can’t even recognize that most people want GOOGLE ITSELF to open in a new tab. Yet they create some BS page with your DAMN HISTORY on it and reminding me every time I open a new tab that I can place bookmarks in the bookmarks bar. I counted. I’ve read that line 10,000 times. I’ve seen it more times, but I’ve actually read the entire reminder word for word 10,000 times. I know I can get things changed in Registry or using extensions. But I won’t. I’m going to wait for someone to change it.

I open an edge new tab to google by putting google in taskbar and use 2 clicks. Ugly but easy.
Sorry don’t get you, can you explain more clearly how you’ve done that?
go to the settings > advanced > search in the address – add new one set as default = google.
now at least the search is google in the “open tab in a blank page”

you can also do this
have the favorites icons taskbar on your browser (you probably already have this)
right click an icon and open in new tab
if you want to open google in it then just add it to your favorites taskbar and right click the icon and “open in new tab”
a small quick way is to also middle (wheel) click the fav icon will open in new tab.
or ctr + click it will open in new tab.
I looked at the text file it saves for these icons but don’t know of a command to put into them to make them auto open in a new tab.

The CTRL Click is the easiest but we should be able to set what page we want a new tab to open to. The solutions here fine but in the end they are all just workarounds for what MS should have made available as standard.
That stupid Top Sites things is nothing more than spam advertising.
MS Please get rid of it and give your users what they are asking for.
