This list also gives the story order, the re-releases and editions that came later, where each game is sold today, and what is known about Fallout 5.

Nine Fallout games have been released, counting the main series and the spin-offs. The dates below are the release dates shown on each game's official store listing, or the release year where only that is published.

Every Fallout game in chronological order

The story order is different from the release order, because Fallout 76 is a prequel. It is set on Reclamation Day in 2102, when Vault 76 opens 25 years after the Great War.

Story order Game Where it fits in the timeline
1 Fallout 76 2102, 25 years after the Great War, in West Virginia's Appalachia
2 Fallout The original wasteland story, generations after the war
3 Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel A Brotherhood of Steel squad campaign set between the first two games
4 Fallout 2 80 years after the first game
5 Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel A console action side story with the Brotherhood of Steel
6 Fallout 3 Vault 101 in the Capital Wasteland, after 200 years sealed underground
7 Fallout: New Vegas The Mojave Wasteland, Hoover Dam and the New Vegas Strip, after Fallout 3
8 Fallout 4 The sole survivor of Vault 111 emerges in the Commonwealth, around the ruins of Boston
Any time Fallout Shelter A Vault management game with no fixed place in the timeline

Play in release order if you want to see the series grow. Play in story order only if you start with Fallout 76 and accept its online requirement.

Is there a Fallout 5 release date?

No. Bethesda has not announced Fallout 5 or a release date for it. The Fallout Day 2026 roundup on fallout.bethesda.net covered Fallout 4 Creations, Fallout 76 World Pets, Fallout Shelter seasons and the Fallout Shelter TV competition, with no new numbered game. Fallout 4 from 2015 remains the latest main-series release.

No remaster of Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas has been announced on Bethesda's own channels either. Treat any date you see elsewhere as a rumour until Bethesda posts it.
