Sign in to Windows with an administrator account. TurboTax Desktop needs administrator rights to install and to run.

How to update TurboTax Desktop on Windows and Mac

TurboTax downloads tax form updates through the program. Force an update when it stalls or a form still shows as not ready.

1. On a Mac, open TurboTax and click the TurboTax menu.
2. Hold down the Option key so Check for Updates changes to Download Latest Updates….
3. Select Download Latest Updates… to install the newest release.
4. On Windows, close TurboTax completely.
5. Open Intuit’s manual update article and download the 2025 file, w_perrelsuperpatchIS_ttax_2025.exe.
6. Double-click the file and follow the prompts to install the update.
7. Open TurboTax again and continue your return.

On a Mac, Check for Updates can keep reporting an update because it adds the current tax form updates each time. That message on its own is not a fault.

Fix TurboTax not installing on Windows 11, Windows 10 or Mac

TurboTax 2025 will not install on Windows 10

TurboTax Desktop 2025 supports Windows 11 (64-bit) only.

1. Open Settings > System > About and read the Windows edition and System type.
2. Upgrade to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s Windows 11 page if the PC qualifies.
3. Or sign in to TurboTax Online and prepare the return in your browser.
4. Use the 2024 software from the install page only for a 2024 return.

The TurboTax installer will not start or stops partway

Missing administrator rights, security software or a damaged download is the usual cause.

1. Delete the downloaded file and download a fresh copy from the install page.
2. Right-click the installer, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab and tick Run this program as administrator.
3. Turn off your antivirus and Windows Defender briefly, then run the installer.
4. Add TurboTax Desktop to the allowed apps in Windows Defender and turn protection back on.
5. Restart the PC in Selective Startup mode and install again if it still fails.

TurboTax keeps asking to restart or shows a Microsoft Installer error

A broken Visual C++ runtime or blocked folder permissions stop the installer.

1. Uninstall TurboTax from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
2. Uninstall every Microsoft Visual C++ entry in the same list.
3. Restart the PC.
4. Reinstall TurboTax, which puts back the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable it needs.

A TurboTax update freezes

Large form updates take time, and an interrupted update leaves files half written.

1. Wait up to 15 minutes before closing anything.
2. Run Disk Cleanup if the updater closed early.

Uninstalling removes the program from the computer. Your license code stays in your Intuit Account for a later reinstall.
