Edge 99 introduces Web Capture support for PDFs, fixes Default Search Providers issue

Microsoft has released Edge 99 Dev 99.0.1135.5 with new features, improvements, and bug fixes. The build added the ability to change air temperature units shown on the mobile new tab page and turns on data loss prevention on websites by default. And, there are more significant changes and fixes, check them below.

Microsoft addresses Edge’s Default Search Engines can’t be removed the issue

Yesterday we reported Google has fixed an issue where users couldn’t delete default search engines in the Chrome browser. Chrome 97 is affected by this issue, Chrome 99 Canary makes SEs deletable again. Micorsoft Edge 97 was also hit by the issue. Microsoft claims today’s Edge dev update addresses the issue.

Here is more background on the issue:

Chromium users running Chrome and Microsoft Edge version 97 noticed the built-in search engines are no longer deletable. Turns out that’s the intention from Google and this change is also part of the manage Search engine settings page redesign. Google later reverted the change after reports realizing the delete option was used as a workaround to prevent search engine hijacking.

Microsoft today released an update to Edge 99 dev and claims “fixed an issue where certain search providers can’t be removed from edge://settings/search engines”.

Other than that, here is what’s new in Edge 99.0.1135.5 Dev

  1. Like Edge Legacy, Edge now shows search suggestions immediately when you click on the address bar
  2. Web Capture support for PDFs.

  3. Added the ability to change the units that the air temperature is shown on moble’s new tab page.
  4. Enabled support for data loss prevention for websites by default.
  5. Added an experimental WebView2 API for clearing browsing data.

The update fixes certain issues for Edge on Mobile. You need to be using dev, to get these fixes. The release includes some changes in behavior and comes with certain known issues you should be aware of.
