To search or visit websites in Chrome browser, we use the Omnibox or the combined search and address bar, the Chromium team seems to have messed Omnibox autofill functionality with a recent update, instead of suggesting most visited URLs from browser history the browser now showing recent searches in address bar when you enter first letter or two letters for a query.
For instance, if you used to visit Twitter.com in Chrome and if you’ve searched for translate, typing t will autofill translate instead of twitter.com.
Google is aware of the Chrome’s weird autofill issue
Chrome users who spotted this issue got worried and asked on Reddit to check if other users are also facing the problem. Indeed, its the case and a bug has been created by an affected user conveying the Chrome now prioritizing searches over URLs from the browser history.
Chromium employee confirmed he can able to reproduce this bug on Chrome 74 (stable), 75 (beta), 76 (dev and canary) and says this behavior is from Chrome 60 build.
Fix
Meanwhile, according to this Reddit thread, disabling Google Drive document suggestions in Omnibox could fix the issue. To do that,
1. Visit about://flags
2. Search for “Omnibox Google Drive Document Suggestions”
3. Select “Disabled” and restart the browser.
We’ve tested the above workaround and it has worked, you can follow this bug for updates on this issue, we’ll let you know when Google resolves the bug.
Thank you for that! It totally worked! I`m revisiting the same pages every day, and it was god awful not to have proper suggestions from history – which is now fixed.
