How to Set Chromium-based Microsoft Edge (Canary/Dev) as default browser in Windows 10

Last updated on April 12, 2019 By Venkat

Liked Microsoft Edge Canary or Dev and want to set as the default browser in Windows 10, you should be visiting Settings app in Windows 10 for that because the Chromium-based Edge doesn’t offer an option in its Settings to make it as default.

Set chromium Microsoft Edge Canary default browser Windows 10

These days, generally, all modern browsers — Internet Explorer 11, old Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, etc-  offer default browser setting in preferences.  The fact is recently released Canary and Dev Edge insider builds don’t offer such option in browser settings, but don’t worry! You can still make any Edge powered by Chromium as default on Windows 10.

Set Chromium-based Edge in Windows 10 as the default browser

1. Click on start to open the menu

2.  Open Settings > Default Apps > Web browser

3. Click on the browser you use as default and choose “Microsoft Edge Canary” or “Microsoft Edge Dev”

4. Done.

Now try to open an HTML file or click on any links within Application on Windows such as CCleaner, the link will open in Chromium Edge browser because we’ve set it as the default application to handle links.
