The best guide is the hardware it was built for: both consoles use an 8-core, 16-thread AMD Zen 2 CPU, and press outlets report GTA 6 runs at 30 frames per second on them (Rockstar's own pages state no frame rate). This page turns those specs and Rockstar's past PC requirements into a clearly labelled estimate, with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen picks and why Qualcomm Snapdragon PCs are a poor fit.

GTA 6 CPU requirements at a glance

Goal Our estimate (not official) Why
Run it at all A 6-core, 12-thread desktop CPU from 2019 or later Rockstar's newest PC requirement (GTA V Enhanced) already recommends an i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600
Match the consoles at 30 fps A modern 8-core, 16-thread CPU PS5 and Xbox Series X both use 8 cores and 16 threads, and press reports put GTA 6 at 30 fps on them
Aim for 60 fps A recent high-end 8-core-plus CPU, such as a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 class chip or newer Doubling the console frame rate roughly doubles how much work the CPU must do each second
Quad-core CPUs Plan to upgrade GTA V Enhanced's minimum is a 4-core i7-4770 from 2013, and GTA 6 is a far larger simulation

None of these are Rockstar's figures. This page will change when Rockstar announces a PC version and publishes real requirements.

Best Intel Core CPUs for GTA 6

Intel's desktop chips mix Performance-cores and Efficient-cores, so compare the thread count and the number of Performance-cores with the consoles' 8 cores and 16 threads. The core and thread figures below come from Intel's specification pages; the GTA 6 fit column is an estimate.

Intel CPU (launch) Cores and threads (Intel spec) GTA 6 fit, our estimate (not official)
Core i7-4770 (Q2 2013) 4 cores / 8 threads Below what GTA 6 is likely to need; it is only GTA V Enhanced's minimum
Core i5-9600K (Q4 2018) 6 cores / 6 threads Borderline; GTA V Enhanced recommends it, but it has well under half a PS5's threads
Core i5-12400 (Q1 2022) 6 Performance-cores / 12 threads Entry pick for console-like settings
Core i7-12700K (Q4 2021) 12 cores (8 Performance + 4 Efficient) / 20 threads Comfortable at 30 to 60 fps
Core i5-14600K (Q4 2023) 14 cores (6 Performance + 8 Efficient) / 20 threads Comfortable at 30 to 60 fps
Core Ultra 9 285K (Q4 2024) 24 cores (8 Performance + 16 Efficient) / 24 threads Best placed for 60 fps and above

Treat any 2021-or-newer Intel chip with 8 Performance-cores, or 20 or more threads, as the safe target. Six-core chips from 12th gen onward are the budget floor in this estimate.

Best AMD Ryzen CPUs for GTA 6

AMD Ryzen is the closest match to the consoles: the PS5 and Xbox Series X CPUs are AMD Zen 2 designs, the same generation as the Ryzen 3000 desktop chips. Every model below has at least the 6 cores and 12 threads this estimate starts at.

AMD CPU (launch) Cores and threads GTA 6 fit, our estimate (not official)
Ryzen 5 3600 (July 2019) 6 cores / 12 threads, Zen 2 Budget floor; GTA V Enhanced recommends it
Ryzen 5 5600X (November 2020) 6 cores / 12 threads Console-like settings
Ryzen 5 7600X (September 2022) 6 cores / 12 threads, AM5 platform Console-like settings, with a newer upgrade path
Ryzen 7 9700X (August 2024) 8 cores / 16 threads Comfortable at 30 to 60 fps
Ryzen 7 7800X3D (April 2023) 8 cores / 16 threads, 96 MB L3 cache Best placed for 60 fps and above
Ryzen 7 9800X3D (November 2024) 8 cores / 16 threads, 96 MB L3 cache Best placed for 60 fps and above

The X3D models carry 96 MB of L3 cache, three times the 32 MB of a standard 8-core Ryzen 7 such as the 7700X. Any 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen from the 7000 or 9000 series matches the consoles' thread count with a far newer architecture.

Qualcomm Snapdragon and GTA 6

Snapdragon X laptops are a poor choice for GTA 6. There is no PC version of GTA 6 at all, and if one arrives it is likely to be an x64 game, as GTA V Enhanced is, that Arm-based Windows PCs would have to emulate.

Point What Microsoft states What it means for GTA 6
Chips Copilot+ PCs such as Surface Laptop (7th Edition) use Snapdragon X Plus (10 core) or Snapdragon X Elite (12 core) processors Plenty of cores, but an Arm design rather than x86
How x64 games run Windows 11 runs unmodified x64 apps under emulation; the Prism emulator in Windows 11 24H2 is tuned for Snapdragon X An x64 PC game would run through Prism rather than natively
Drivers Emulation covers user-mode code only; kernel-mode components and drivers must be built for Arm64 Low-level game components cannot be emulated
Anti-cheat Games and apps might not work if they rely on anti-cheat drivers that are not made for Arm-based PCs An online mode that uses an x64-only anti-cheat driver would not start

Our estimate (not official): for a GTA 6 PC build, choose an x86 Intel Core or AMD Ryzen CPU. Buy a Snapdragon X laptop for battery life and everyday work, not for Rockstar's next game.

PS5 and Xbox Series X CPU vs PC CPUs

GTA 6 was designed around current consoles, so their processors set the baseline. Both are 8-core AMD Zen 2 designs with simultaneous multithreading.

Console CPU (manufacturer spec) Memory GTA 6 frame rate
PlayStation 5 AMD Ryzen Zen 2, 8 cores / 16 threads, up to 3.5 GHz 16 GB GDDR6 30 fps at launch, per press reports (not stated on Rockstar's pages)
Xbox Series X Custom Zen 2, 8 cores at 3.8 GHz (3.6 GHz with SMT) 16 GB GDDR6 30 fps at launch, per press reports

If the reported 30 fps target on an 8-core, 16-thread CPU holds, GTA 6 is likely to lean hard on the processor. A PC CPU with fewer cores or threads than the consoles is a risk.

GTA 6 frame rate targets and CPU load

There is no PC frame rate to report, because there is no PC version. What has been reported is the console target, and that sets how much CPU a PC needs to beat it.

Target Status CPU implication
30 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Reported by press outlets in August 2026; not stated on Rockstar's own pages If accurate, an 8-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU at 3.5 to 3.8 GHz is what 30 fps needs
60 fps on PC Our estimate (not official): achievable only with a much faster CPU Each frame must be prepared in about 16.7 ms instead of 33.3 ms
120 fps and above on PC Our estimate (not official): only the fastest gaming CPUs About four times the console's CPU work per second
Frame generation (DLSS, FSR) Not announced for GTA 6 GTA V Enhanced supports DLSS 3 and FSR 3, which raise displayed frame rates by generating frames

Rockstar has not detailed console graphics modes, so the reported GTA 6 console frame rate is the only target a PC has to beat for now.

GTA V Enhanced PC features and their CPU cost

If GTA 6 follows GTA V Enhanced, Rockstar's latest PC release, a PC version would bring features the consoles lack. Each is listed with what it asks of the CPU.

PC feature in GTA V Enhanced Would it help GTA 6 on PC? Load on the CPU
Higher frame rates Yes, the main reason to wait for PC Heavy: more frames means more simulation per second
Higher resolutions and wider aspect ratios Yes Mostly a GPU cost, but ultrawide shows more of the world
PC-only ray tracing (ambient occlusion, global illumination) Likely Mainly a GPU cost
NVIDIA DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 3 Likely Eases the GPU; frame generation raises displayed frame rate
DirectStorage on an SSD Likely Faster loading on supported SSDs

Whether ray tracing in GTA 6 would follow GTA V Enhanced's PC-only effects has not been announced.

GTA 6 PC requirements by tier (our estimate)

These tiers are estimates built from the console specs and Rockstar's recent PC requirements. Treat the CPU column as the most reliable part and the rest as a rough guide.

Tier, Our estimate (not official) CPU RAM Graphics Storage
Minimum (30 fps, low settings) 6 cores / 12 threads, 2019 or newer 16 GB Above GTA V Enhanced's recommended RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT tier SSD required
Recommended (console-like, 30 to 60 fps) 8 cores / 16 threads, 2021 or newer 16 to 32 GB Upper-midrange current GPU NVMe SSD
High (60 fps and above) Recent high-end 8-core-plus CPU 32 GB High-end current GPU NVMe SSD with DirectStorage support

The CPU is only one part of a full GTA 6 PC requirements estimate; how much RAM GTA 6 is likely to need and the graphics card to plan for follow the same console-based reasoning.

GTA 6 CPU requirements vs GTA 5 and RDR2

Rockstar's official PC requirements show a steady rise in core counts. The core and thread figures come from Intel's specification pages.

Game (PC release) Minimum CPU Recommended CPU
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2019) Intel Core i5-2500K / AMD FX-6300 Intel Core i7-4770K / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
GTA V Enhanced (2025) Intel Core i7-4770 (4 cores / 8 threads, 2013) / AMD FX-9590 Intel Core i5-9600K (6 cores / 6 threads, 2018) / AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GTA 6 (no PC version) Not announced Not announced

Compare that with the consoles' 8 cores and 16 threads: even GTA V Enhanced's recommended Intel chip has fewer threads than a PS5. That is why the estimates above start at six cores and twelve threads.

GTA 6 CPU check by core count

Your CPU Our estimate (not official) What to do
4 cores, with or without hyper-threading Below what GTA 6 is likely to need Plan a platform upgrade, but wait for official requirements
6 cores / 6 threads (for example Core i5-9600K) Borderline Expect to upgrade for smooth play
6 cores / 12 threads, 2019 or newer Likely playable at console-like settings Wait for requirements before spending
8 cores / 16 threads, 2021 or newer Likely comfortable at 30 to 60 fps No action needed yet
Recent high-end 8-core-plus (e.g. 12th-gen Core i7 class or newer) Best placed for 60 fps and above Spend on the GPU instead when the time comes

Laptop CPUs work under their own power limits, so a gaming laptop running GTA 6 needs its own check, and older desktops face tougher odds on a low-end PC.

How to check your CPU cores in Windows 11

Windows shows your core and thread count in Task Manager. Compare the two numbers with the rows above.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or right-click Start and select Task Manager.
  2. Select the Performance tab.
  3. Select CPU in the left pane.
  4. Read Cores for the physical core count and Logical processors for the thread count.
  5. Note the processor name shown at the top right, then look up its launch date on Intel's or AMD's website.

When to buy a CPU for GTA 6

No. Do not buy a CPU for GTA 6 until Rockstar announces a PC version and publishes its requirements. No PC release date exists, Rockstar's last two PC versions arrived 13 to 19 months after consoles, and CPUs bought now will be a generation or more old by then.

If you want to play on November 19, 2026, a console is the only option, and the likely wait for GTA 6 on PC is a year or more.

Frequently asked questions

What CPU does GTA 6 need?

Rockstar has not published any PC requirements, because GTA 6 has no PC version yet. As an estimate (not official), plan on a modern 8-core, 16-thread CPU to match the consoles, since PS5 and Xbox Series X both use 8-core, 16-thread AMD Zen 2 processors.

What CPU is in the PS5?

The PS5 uses an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads at a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz, according to Sony's hardware specification. Press outlets report GTA 6 runs at 30 fps on it at launch; Rockstar's own pages give no frame rate.

What CPU is in the Xbox Series X?

Microsoft lists the Xbox Series X CPU as 8 cores at 3.8 GHz, or 3.6 GHz with simultaneous multithreading, on a custom AMD Zen 2 design. Press outlets reported in August 2026 that GTA 6 runs at 30 fps on Xbox Series X|S at launch, though Rockstar's own pages do not state it.

Will a 6-core CPU run GTA 6?

Possibly, at console-like settings, if it is a 6-core, 12-thread chip from 2019 or later. That is an estimate, not an official figure; older 6-core chips without hyper-threading are a weaker bet against consoles with 16 threads.

Is GTA 6 more CPU or GPU heavy?

Rockstar has not said. The reported 30 fps console target on 8-core CPUs suggests a demanding simulation, so a PC version is likely to need a strong CPU as well as a strong GPU, especially for 60 fps.

Will an Intel Core i5-9600K run GTA 6?

It is a borderline estimate. The i5-9600K is GTA V Enhanced's recommended Intel CPU, but Intel lists it at 6 cores and 6 threads, well short of the 16 threads in a PS5 or Xbox Series X.

When will GTA 6 PC requirements be announced?

Rockstar has not said, because it has not announced a PC version. Requirements normally arrive with a PC announcement; for GTA V, that announcement came about nine months after the console launch.

Which CPU to buy for GTA 6

Plan on an 8-core, 16-thread x86 CPU from 2021 or later, such as a Ryzen 7 9700X or Core i7-12700K class chip, for console-like GTA 6 on PC, skip Snapdragon X for this game, and buy nothing until Rockstar publishes real requirements. The consoles GTA 6 was built for use 8-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPUs and are reported to target 30 fps, while Rockstar has announced no PC version or specs.
