This guide covers gift cards and partner promo codes, what happens to a plan you already pay for, the rules that block a code, and the fixes for each error Spotify documents.

The fastest way to redeem a Spotify Premium code

Spotify's documented route is its website, not the app. The page works in any browser on a phone, PC or Mac.

  1. Open spotify.com/redeem in a browser. It sends you to the login page and then to spotify.com/account/redeem.
  2. Log in to the Spotify account that should receive Premium.
  3. On a physical gift card, gently scratch off the PIN cover with a coin or card to reveal the code.
  4. Type the code into the field exactly as printed.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Click Redeem.

Spotify codes use capital letters, numbers or a mix of both. There are no lowercase letters, so type every letter in capitals.

Which kind of Spotify code you have and where it goes

A Spotify Premium code is a string of characters that adds Premium time to an account. Where it comes from decides where you use it and who handles problems.

What you have Where to redeem it Who to contact if it fails
Spotify gift card bought before sales ended Log in at spotify.com/account/redeem Spotify support; the store for refunds
Promo code from a partner company or rewards program The link or page named in the partner's instructions; use spotify.com/redeem only if they point there The partner that issued the code
Premium included with a phone or internet plan Nothing to redeem; the partner activates and bills it The partner, which manages your payments
Premium for Starbucks Partners Starbucks Partner Hub or Retail Portal (search: Spotify) Starbucks support at 1-800-STARBUC (782-7282)
A "free code" posted online or sent by a stranger Do not redeem it Report suspicious emails to [email protected]

Spotify gift cards are no longer sold. Previously purchased cards stay valid and can still be redeemed, so no shop or website is a safe place to buy a new one. To pay for Premium now, pick a plan at spotify.com/premium.

Check these rules before you enter the code

Most failed redemptions break one of these rules. Checking them first saves you from burning your limited attempts.

Rule What Spotify says What to do
Right account Premium lands on the account you are logged in to Check the email or login method before you click Redeem
Country or region The account's country or region must match where the gift card was bought Compare your profile's Country or region with the card's country
Store activation A card bought in a store must be activated by the cashier Check the receipt shows the card was activated
Plan type Gift cards work only on an individual Premium plan or a free account Do not redeem on Premium Student, Family, Duo, a trial offer or a Basic plan
Add-ons Gift cards can't be applied while you are subscribed to an add-on Remove the add-on first, or redeem on an account without one
Stacking limit An account can hold at most 18 months of Premium time Save extra codes until the balance drops below 18 months
Attempts After 4 failed attempts you see an error and must wait 24 hours Check each character before you submit

Redeem a Spotify code on your phone

Use the phone's browser rather than the Spotify app. Apple does not allow Premium sign-up inside the iPhone and iPad app, and Spotify's redeem steps use its website on every platform.

  1. Open Safari, Chrome or another browser on your iPhone or Android phone.
  2. Go to spotify.com/redeem.
  3. Log in with the same method you use in the Spotify app, such as email, phone number, Apple or Google.
  4. Enter the code in capitals.
  5. Tap Continue, then tap Redeem.
  6. Open the Spotify app, log out and log back in so the app picks up the new plan.

Redeem a Spotify code on a PC or Mac

Any desktop browser works, including Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Safari. The Spotify desktop app is not needed.

  1. Open your browser and go to spotify.com/redeem.
  2. Log in to your Spotify account when the login page appears.
  3. Paste or type the code into the code field.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Click Redeem.
  6. Go to Manage your subscription on the account page to confirm the new Premium time.

If a shared computer is already logged in to someone else's Spotify account, log out first. A code cannot be pulled back once it is redeemed.

How to check the code worked

A successful redemption shows on your account page, not in an email you need to wait for.

  1. On the web, go to Manage your subscription at spotify.com/account/subscription/manage.
  2. Check that the plan shown is Premium, and read the billing date at the top of the account page.
  3. In the app, tap your profile picture at the top.
  4. Tap Settings and privacy, then Account, then Billing.
  5. Play a song on demand or download a playlist to confirm Premium features are active.
  6. If the account page shows Premium but the app does not, log out of the app and log back in.

What happens to your current plan after you redeem

A gift card adds time to an individual Premium plan. When that time starts depends on the plan you have today.

Your plan when you redeem What happens
Spotify Free Premium starts immediately
Premium Individual you pay for The gift card starts on your next payment date, and regular payments resume after the card's time is used
No payment method saved when the time ends The account reverts to the free, ad-supported service
Premium Student, Family or Duo The gift card can't be applied
A trial offer The gift card can't be applied
Basic plan, or any active add-on The gift card can't be applied
Premium through a phone or internet provider The partner manages the plan; cancel with them and wait until your account switches to free
Premium from a gift card, and you want to change payment method or country Wait until the account changes back to free before updating the payment method

Your playlists, saved music and settings stay the same whichever plan you move to or from.

How to cancel after redeeming a Premium code

Gift card time is not a recurring payment. If no payment method is saved, the account drops to free on its own when the time runs out, and there is nothing to cancel.

  1. Go to Manage your plan at spotify.com/account/subscription/manage.
  2. Select Cancel subscription to stop payments that would start after the gift card time.
  3. Check Payment on the account page if cancel is not offered; a partner company may bill the plan and handles cancellation.
  4. Return an unused store-bought gift card to the store for a refund, since Spotify refers those requests to the retailer.

After a paid plan is cancelled, Premium stays until the next billing date and then switches to free.

Fix a Spotify code that will not redeem

The code is reported as invalid

A character was misread; a zero looks like a capital O, and a capital I looks like a one.

  1. Re-read the code in good light and type every letter in capitals.
  2. Swap lookalike characters one at a time, such as 0 for O or 1 for I.
  3. Stop before your fourth failed attempt and double-check the whole code.
  4. Message Spotify support through the Contact us page if the code is damaged or unreadable.

An error appears after several tries and nothing works

Spotify locks redemption after 4 failed attempts.

  1. Stop entering codes.
  2. Wait 24 hours.
  3. Enter the code again, checking each character first.

The code is not valid for your country or region

The account's country or region does not match where the gift card was bought.

  1. On a free account, go to Edit profile on the account page.
  2. Scroll to Country or region and check the value.
  3. Select the correct country from the list, then click Save profile. Your new country only shows when you are physically there.
  4. If you signed up with Facebook or Apple, change the country or region with that service too.
  5. Return the card to the store if you cannot use an account in the card's country.

The code can't be used with your current plan

Gift cards can't be applied to Premium Student, Family, Duo, trial offers, Basic plans or accounts with an add-on.

  1. Check your plan under Manage your subscription.
  2. Remove any add-on if that is the only blocker.
  3. Otherwise, redeem the card on an individual account that is free or on Premium Individual.
  4. If a partner company bills your Premium, cancel with them and redeem once the account is free.

A store-bought card is rejected straight away

The cashier did not activate the card at the till.

  1. Check the receipt for an activation line.
  2. Take the card and receipt back to the store and ask them to activate it or refund it.

The code redeemed on the wrong account

The browser was logged in to a different Spotify account, or you use more than one login method.

  1. Open Edit login methods to see which email, phone number, Apple or Google login each account uses.
  2. Log in to the account that received the time and confirm it under Manage your subscription.
  3. Message Spotify support from the Contact us page; Spotify's help pages do not describe moving redeemed time yourself.

The code redeemed but the app still shows Spotify Free

The app has not refreshed the account, or Premium was added to a different login.

  1. Log out of the Spotify app and log back in.
  2. Check that the app uses the same login method as the browser you redeemed in.
  3. Confirm the plan on the web account page.

How to avoid Spotify code scams

Spotify gift cards are no longer on sale, so any site offering new Spotify gift cards or "free Premium codes" is not a Spotify channel.

Redeem only codes from a card you bought before sales ended, or from a partner promotion you can trace to the partner itself, and type them only on spotify.com. Spotify never asks for your password, payment info or tax ID by email, never requests payment through a third party such as Western Union, and only sends mail from addresses ending in @spotify.com. Forward suspicious messages to [email protected], then delete them. If you already entered your password on a fake page, reset your Spotify password and change it anywhere else you reused it.

Keep the receipt and the card until the Premium time shows on your account. Store-bought card refunds go through the store.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I redeem a Spotify Premium code?

Redeem it at spotify.com/redeem, which opens spotify.com/account/redeem after you log in. Enter the code, click Continue, then click Redeem. Codes from a partner promotion may use the partner's own link, so follow the instructions that came with the code.

Can I redeem a Spotify Premium code in the app?

Spotify's redeem steps use its website, not the app. Open spotify.com/redeem in your phone's browser instead. The iPhone and iPad app cannot sign you up for Premium at all because of Apple's restrictions, so the browser is the reliable route on every device.

How do I redeem a Spotify Premium code on my phone?

Open Safari or Chrome on the phone, go to spotify.com/redeem and log in with the same method you use in the Spotify app. Enter the code, tap Continue and tap Redeem. Then log out of the app and back in so it shows Premium.

How do I redeem a Spotify Premium code on a PC?

Open any browser, including Microsoft Edge or Chrome, and go to spotify.com/redeem. Log in, enter the code in capitals, click Continue and then Redeem. Check Manage your subscription on the account page to confirm the Premium time was added.

How do I redeem a Spotify Premium code from Microsoft?

Follow the redemption instructions Microsoft sent with the code, because the partner that issues a promo code sets how it is claimed. If those instructions send you to spotify.com/redeem, log in there and enter the code. Problems with a partner code go to the partner first.

Can you stack multiple Spotify Premium codes?

Yes, up to a limit. Spotify lets an account hold at most 18 months of Premium time. Once your balance reaches 18 months, keep the remaining codes and redeem them after enough time has been used.

Can you redeem a Spotify code for someone else?

Premium goes to whichever account is logged in when you click Redeem. To give Premium to someone else, hand them the unredeemed code or card so they redeem it on their own account. Their account's country must match where the card was bought.

Can I use a Spotify gift card for Premium Family or Duo?

No. Spotify gift cards can't be applied to Premium Family, Premium Duo, Premium Student, trial offers or Basic plans. They work only on an individual Premium plan or to upgrade a free account.

What happens if I already have Premium when I redeem?

On Premium Individual, the gift card starts on your next payment date and pauses your regular payments until its time is used. Payments then continue normally. On a free account, Premium starts immediately.

Can I still buy a Spotify gift card?

No. Spotify gift cards are no longer available for purchase, although cards bought earlier remain valid and can still be redeemed. To get Premium now, choose a plan and payment method at spotify.com/premium.

Why does Spotify say to try again in 24 hours?

Spotify blocks redemption after 4 failed code attempts. Wait 24 hours, then enter the code again. Check lookalike characters first, such as a zero and a capital O, or a capital I and a one.
