Mozilla is developing something really interesting with a name called URLbar Interventions where it shows tips first in address bar results (on which you can act) when you search for something that includes phrases such as “Refresh Firefox”, “download Firefox”, “Clear Firefox cache”, the tips allow the user to launch Refresh Firefox or clear recent history dialogs from the address bar itself. The browser maker is currently testing these Firefox tips in the Nightly version.
“We’ll port the interventions experiment to the urlbar. When the user searches an actionable string, we’ll show a Tip result in the Urlbar that allows them to act on their search immediately” Mozilla reveals a little about the feature they’re working on in the bug.
In the Firefox address bar, you’ll generally see search suggestions from the default search engine along with suggestions from your browser history and bookmarks. Mozilla wants to intervene and provide a tip on something that already built into the browser when users search for it.
For instance, when a user types how to clear Firefox cache in the address bar, Nightly shows “Clear your cache, cookies, history and more” with “Choose what to clear” button which when clicked, opens the Clear Recent History dialog. For this, you generally use Ctrl+Shift+Delete shortcut or visit Privacy and Security settings > History.
Consider another scenario where you want to refresh Firefox which fixes many issues by removing extensions and by restoring browser settings to default: to do this, you’ll visit about: support and use the option displayed. If the user types Refresh Firefox or “Firefox crashing” or “firefox not working” or “firefox slow” keywords, Mozilla shows the Refresh button in the address bar as a tip with a message ” Restore default settings and remove old add-ons for optimal performance.”.
The tip wording changes to “Nightly is up to date. Trying to fix a problem?. Restore default settings and remove old add-ons for optimal performance” for the download firefox keyword. Firefox shows appropriate tips for the queries listed given in the screenshot.
UPDATE April 13, 2020: Firefox 75 shows solution buttons in search suggestions, these can be disabled by toggling the below preferences value to false in about:config.
