4 Ways to Enter Picture in Picture mode in Chrome

With Chrome 70, Google has introduced Picture-in-Picture mode where the user can watch videos in a floating window on top of other Chrome Windows when he/she selects the PIP option available in the right-click menu.

Not all websites support PIP yet, YouTube currently supports it and you can experience the feature on it. More than one and a half years passed since the launch of PIP, we take a look at the number of ways available to launch Picture in Picture mode in the Chrome browser below.

I.By using Picture in Picture Right-click option

1. Launch Chrome browser

2.  Visit YouTube

3. Play any video

4. Right-click on video two times and select “Picture in Picture”

II. Picture-in-Picture Extension (by Google)

Google Chrome evangelist, Francois Beaufort has developed Picture-in-Picture Extension and is available on Chrome Web Store. The extension when installed adds an icon to toolbar, by clicking on it you can able to enter PIP.

III.Global Media Controls UI or Media Hub

Recently Google developed Media Hub feature, also is known as Global Media Controls UI with the aim to allow users to control media playing in the browser.

Whenever a video/audio is playing in the Chrome browser, you’ll notice the GMC icon on the toolbar, by clicking on it you can able to pause current music. GMC also allows playing previous or next track if you’re playing a  Playlist.

Google has recently added Picture-in-Picture support to media hub or GMC, where you can able to enter PIP by clicking the icon in media controls UI without needing to follow the hassle mentioned in the first method. This is now available out of the box in Chrome 81 stable without the need to enable any flag.

IV. Quick Picture in Picture bookmarklet

Chrome Dev Relations lead, Paul kinlan popular for bookmarklets where in this site we covered his Scroll to Text Fragment bookmarklet, has now come up with another one named Quick Picture in Picture.

Dragging and dropping that to Chrome bookmarks bar and clicking on it whenever you’re playing a video on YouTube or PIP supported websites, make the video play in the mini window.

One limitation here is, the bookmarklet works only when the video is playing or active.
